Вступ

Даний посібник розроблено для студентів будівельних закладів.

Мета посібника: поглибити знання студентів в читанні і перекладі з англійської мови на українську мову технічної літератури по будівництву і архітектурі.

Посібник містить десять частин, які включають в себе тексти: I. Деякі факти про будівельні матеріали; II. Метал, скло і пластик, як будівельні матеріали; III. Цемент; IV. Бетон; V. Найкраще з залізобетону; VI. Цивільне будівництво; VII. З історії цивільного будівництва; VIII. Проект мікрорайону; IX. Дещо про цементні матеріали; X. Проблема довговічності в будівництві.

До текстів даються вправи, мета яких – закріпити лексичний і граматичний матеріал певної частини посібника.

В текстах і вправах є лексика, яка характерна для технічної літератури.

Різноманітність тематики посібника дає можливість здійснювати міжпредметний зв'язок: вивчення того чи іншого тексту може бути погоджено з вивченням відповідного розділу з курсу спеціальних дисциплін.

Part I

I. Copy the sentences. Underline predicates and define their tenses and voice. Translate the sentences

1. Methods of designing structures are changing.

2. The building of skyscrapers was started in the 19th century.

3. New methods of construction have been brought into being by the ever growing housing demands.

II. Copy the sentences and translate them

1. The present building industry has a very long history.

2. Prefabrication construction in concrete was widely employed in many European countries after the war.

3. The constructive principles did not develop much for a very long time.

III. Copy the sentences using proper voice and tense-forms of the verbs given in brackets. Translate the sentences

1. We understood that we (to choose) the wrong method of construction.

2. The chief engineer told us that a modern business-center (to build) near the Technical University.

3. The builders (did not know) now if they (to give) enough Portland cement to complete their job.

IV. Copy and translate the complex sentences with asyndetical subordinate clauses

1. We know an increase in the volume of building can only be achieved by greater productivity.

2. The builders promised they would complete the block of flats before Easter.

3. The reinforced concrete they produce is of high quality.

V. Copy the sentences. Underline Infinitives, Participles (I or II), Gerunds and define their functions. Translate the sentences

1. One of the new techniques in housebuilding is to assemble buildings from factory-made blocks of rooms.

2. The steel framework must be normally hidden in walls, floors and partitions.

3. Flats in blocks to be built up to the latest designs are marked by a better level of comfort.

VI. Read and copy the text, given below. Translate it in a written form
