St. Petersburg
St. Petersburg, one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, was founded by Peter I in 1703 and from 1712 up to 1918 it was the capital of Russia. The city is situated on the East coast of the Gulf of Finland in the delta of the Neva river. St. Petersburg is called the Venice of the North for its numerous rivers, canals, bridges and embankments. St. Petersburg is a comparatively young city, but its short history is rich in significant and tragic events. It is famous for its revolutionary history.
After the revolution of 1917 it was renamed Leningrad and became the capital of the new Republic. In 1991 St. Petersburg got back its original name. In the years of World War II the city was besieged by the fascists and cut off the rest of the country. The blockade lasted 900 days.
St. Petersburg has always been one of the finest cities in the world. Its fine sights, numerous historical and architectural monuments are of great interest for all people. The magnificent buildings of the Winter Palace, the Admiralty, the Kazan and St. Isaac’s Cathedral are masterpieces of world architecture. St. Petersburg is a city of great historical and cultural importance. The museums of St. Petersburg have rich collections of art treasures. There are a lot of theatres and concert halls in St. Petersburg such as the Mariinsky Theatre, the Tovstonogov, the Pushkin and the Mali.
