Mammoth Mountain village is the typical prefab resort-style conglomeration of overpriced gift shops, fake-authentic theme bars and restaurants (tropical, Irish, Mexican, etc.) that still manages to be a fun place to stumble around during a snowy winter evening.

A gondola connects the village to the base of the mountain, so you can stay at the resort rooms without needing to drive during your visit. Newly added this year is a ski run connecting the hill to the village, so you won't have to wait in the long end-of-day lines to download on the lift, and can even bomb down for a quick lunch during the day.

The town of Mammoth Lakes features some good eats, from Nordic food at the upscale Skadi restaurant, to lamb shanks at the homey Slocum's Grill & Bar, and après-ski at the infamous Whiskey Creek, once ranked by a ski magazine as the cheesiest ski bar in all of America. But after a number of beers, the place seemed OK to me.

For a unique evening dining experience, ride in a pimped-out snowcat from the base of Mammoth to a luxury meal in the mid-mountain Parallax dining room (high heels definitely not recommended).
