Chicago
It has been said that Chicago is the city where the dandified. East meets the Wild West. Despite its beautiful setting on the shores of Lake Michigan, Chicago is not a soft dreamy place. It is an industrial city, the USA¢s largest railway center, and it has the world¢s busiest airport.
Chicago¢s well-known nickname, «Windy City», refers to the fierce winds which occasionally blow off Lake Michigan. The city was also known, for many years, for its famous gangsters. However, people from Chicago are more proud of their achievements in other fields. They boast that it was they who invented skyscraper. This claim is based on a street-skeleton building, ten stories high, built in 1885.
Chicago has a population with many different ethnic origins. There are people of German, Scandinavian, Arabic, Korean, Polish and Irish descent, as well as one million Blacks and half a million Hispanics. The city¢s total population of 3,4 million makes it the USA¢s second largest city, after New York City.
3. Make up 5 questions and ask your partner to answer.
4. Enjoy Yourself:
What a memory.
A school teacher who had been telling a class of small pupils the story of the discovery of America by Columbus, ended with: «And all this happened more than 400 years ago».
A little boy, his eyes wide open with wonder, said after a moment¢s thought: «Oh! What a memory you have got!»
Every medial has its Reverse.
– «How is your daughter doing in America?»
– «Grand! She married a nice American boy. He helps her with the cleaning, washes dishes, looks after the baby when she wants to go out – in fact, he does everything for her.»
– «And how is your son doing?»
– «Poor boy! He married a slut (неряха) of an American girl. He must help her with the cleaning, wash the dishes, look after the baby when she goes out; in fact he has to do everything for her.»
5. Learn the proverbs by heart:
When in Rome, do as the Romans do. - С волками жить, по-волчьи выть.
All for lead to Rome. - Все дороги ведут в Рим.
One for all and all for one. - Один за всех и все за одного.
A man is known by the company he keeps. - С кем поведешься, от того и наберешься.
