II. Translate the following sentences paying attention to the use of the past tenses in "when-clauses":

Model: He turned when I saw him.

He was writing when I saw him.

He had writing it when I saw him.

He had been writing for some time when I saw him.

1. Когда Дэвид приехал в школу, директор и его семья отдыхали на юге. 2. Когда Дэвид приехал в школу, там никого не было: мальчики уехали домой. 3. Дэвид жил в школе уже месяц, когда вернулись мальчики. 4. Когда Дэвид вошел в комнату, сестра перестала играть на скрипке. 5. Когда Дэн вошел в комнату, его младшая сестра играла на скрипке. 6. Сестра играла на скрипке уже больше часа, когда Дэн вошел в комнату. 7. Сестра уже закончила играть на скрипке, когда Дэн вошел в комнату. 8. Когда он вышел на улицу, мальчики играли с собакой. 9. Мальчики уже минут пятнадцать играли с собакой, когда он вышел на улицу. 10. Мальчики уже наигрались с собакой, когда он вышел на улицу.

III. Open the brackets using one of the Past Tenses:

Jim (wait) for Mary for half an hour yesterday. She (be) never so late before. So he thought she (forget) about their meeting. He went to the telephone to find out if she (leave). He learned that Mary (wait) for him outside the cinema for half an hour. She (telephone) home twice during that time. Jim was very much surprised to hear it as he (stand) at the cinema for half an hour too. It was clear that Mary (go) to the wrong cinema. Jim ran to the cinema, they usually went to. And indeed there she was. They (go) to the cinema together for 2 months, and this was the first mistake they (make).

As they (miss) the first part of the film, they decided to wait for the next show. They were awfully hungry as they (have) no dinner. Jim invited Mary to a cafe. She agreed as she (think) of her tea for some time too.

IV. Analyse the relations of actions:

1. The doctor said that perhaps she wished to see because you had gone to school together. 2. He felt certain that the old woman wanted to tell him something. 3. I knew that Mary was leaving early the next day, that she was packing her things upstairs now, and that I should probably never see her again. 4. We were told that until a new governess came Mother would give us lessons herself. 5. I didn't ask anyone what had been decided. 6. It was announced in the papers that the man had disappeared and that the police were looking for him. 7. The idea was that the boy would come again. 8. Father asked me if I had been winning more games lately. 9. I knew you had done nothing to be ashamed of. 10. I wonder if you realized how difficult it was. 11. I tired to forget who I was. 12. Who's in the house besides you? I thought it was empty.

V. Open the brackets. Show different relations between actions:

Model: I knew he (tell) the truth.

I knew he had told the truth.

I knew he would tell the truth.

VI. Translate into English:

1. Я тоже не знал, что вы заняты. 2. Преподаватель спросил, сколько новых слов в 11 уроке. 3. Мой товарищ позвонил и сказал, что болен и не может придти на урок. 4. Он сказал, что знает три иностранных языка. 5. Он спросил, сколько времени у нас обычно уходит, чтобы добраться до института. 6. Он сказал вам, когда вернется с работы? 7. Он сказал нам, что будет очень занят сегодня. 8. Он был уверен, что брат скоро будет здоров. 9. Он сказал, что не может сделать эту работу, так как у него нет времени. 10. Он сказал, что должен сделать это сразу же. 11. Он спросил, кто из нас говорит по-немецки. 12. Он сказал, что никогда не был в этом городе. 13. Он ответил, что освободится, как только закончит перевод статьи.
