Official name – Ukraine
Area – 603.700 square kilometers
Population – 48 million
Capital city –Kyiv
The highest mountain – Hoverla (2.061 metres), Roman Kosh (1.545 metres)
The longest river –the Dnipro
Climate – mild and warm
Ukraine is situated in the east of the European continent. It has its own territory, constitution, higher and local bodies of state power ( the Verhovna Rada and local Radas ), its own government, national emblem, state flag and anthem.
There are 24 administrative regions and the Crimean autonomous republic in Ukraine. The country borders on the Russian Federation, Belarus, Moldova, Poland, Slovak Republic, Hungary, Romania.
Ukraine is known for its mild climate and attractive scenery, with numerous lakes, rivers, thick forests, vast plains, the forested Carpathian Mountains in the West and the Crimean Mountains in the South. It is washed by the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, and it has very important ports. The major rivers are the Dnipro, the Dnister, the Bug, the Donets.
Ukraine is rich in mineral resources, such as iron ore , manganese ore, coal. Grain, industrial crops , potatoes, fruit and vegetables are produced. There are numerous enterprises in the fields of engineering, metal working, chemical engineering, coal mining, fuel production, light , heavy and food industries. Diesel locomotives, sea-going ships, aircraft, buses, television sets, computers and many other commodities are produced in Ukraine to meet the country’s domestic demand as well as for export.
The term “Ukraine ” was first mentioned in the 12th century manuscripts, but the first state on the territory of modern Ukraine was established by the Scythians in the region to the north of the Black Sea. In the 9th century Slavonic tribes inhabiting this territory united to form the powerful state of Kyivan Rus. But in the 13th century Kyivan Rus split into several principalities which were soon conquered by the Mongolian Golden Horde. The Ukrainian people managed survive and reunite. One of the most famous states established on the territory of Ukraine was the Cossack Republic of Zaporizhian Sich.
The Verhovna Rada passed the Act of Proclamation of Independence of Ukraine on August 24th.
Ukraine is a country with a rich culture. Masterpieces of Ukrainian literature and art are a contribution to the treasure-house of world culture. Ukrainians are proud of such famous writers, artists and scientists as Taras Shevchenko, Ivan Franko, Lesia Ukrainka, Mykhailo Hrushevsky and many others. Our country is a member of the United Nations of UNESCO and other international organizations.
