Task 1

The theme: The most important and widely used building materials

Aim: to develop students’ speaking and writing activity

Form: Report

You are taking part in a student’s scientific conference. “The most important and widely used building materials”. Every student is asked to make a report about them and their functions.

Task 2

The theme: “Shapes and properties”

Aim: to develop student’ creative thinking and to enlarge word-stock.

Form: Glossary

Task 3

The theme: Building company

The aim: to develop students’ communicative skills

The form: problem solving

Problem-solving.

1.Imagine that you are a director of a big building company and you have a market where building materials are sold . What will you do in order to have a lot of clients? What kind of building materials are you going to sell?

2.Give the advantages and disadvantages of building materials and prove them.

Task 4

The theme: The most important and widely used building materials

The aim: to develop students’ communicative and speaking skills

The form: Make a slide presentation

Make a slide presentation about forms, properties and shapes of building materials.

Task 5

The theme: Make up a dialogue”The shape of buildings”

Aim: develop students’ speaking skills and logical thinking.

Form: Discussion

Students produce sentences like this:

The Egyptian house is cubical and has a roof shaped like a hemisphere.

Task 1

The theme: “Structural elements”

Aim: to develop students’ writing activity

Form: Report

Make up a story or a report on one of the suggested topics.

  1. Roman Arches

  2. Gothic Arches

  3. Modern Arched Type Structures

Task 2

The theme: Development of the dome form.

Aim: to develop students’ speaking activity

Form: Oral presentation (8-10 min)

Use the following questions as a plan.

  1. What is the three dimensional counterpart of the arch?

  2. How can you describe the true circular form of the dome?

  3. What material did Roman builders use for domes?

  4. What is the great example of Roman concrete work?

  5. Who constructed the first Renaissance double dome?

  6. What was the idea of its construction?

Task 3

The theme: Reinforced-concrete Slab

Aim: develop students’ speaking skills and logical thinking.

Form: Role playing

Ask you friend to prove that the reinforced –concrete slab has a great advantage over the most earlier systems. Use the following word combinations.

A good horizontal diaphragm

to bind the walls or columns together

to distribute any side loads

to distribute any side loads between the walls or columns

Task 4

The theme: Structural elements

Aim: to develop students’ speaking activity.

Form: Cinquain (синквэйн)

Make up a cinquain with words concerning the theme.

The structure of cinquain:

  1. Первая строчка-одно слово, имя существительное;

  2. Вторая строчка- два прилагательных, раскрывающих тему;

  3. Третья строчка-три глагола, описывающих действия, относящиеся к теме;

  4. Четвертая строчка-целая фраза, предложение, состоящее из нескольких слов, с помощью которого высказывается отношение к теме;

  5. Пятая строчка-слово- резюме, которое дает новую интерпретацию темы, позволяет выразить к ней личное отношение.

Example:

1-Mother

2-Kind and clever

3-Loves, worries, takes care, gives advices

4-You will never forget what your mother has done for you

5-Happiness

TASK 5

Theme: Structural elements

Aims: to develop students’ writing skills and to enlarge students’ word-stock.

Form: Glossary (30-40 words)

Write the glossary of words concerning with arches, beams, domes, floor systems, foundations, shells, trusses and space frames .
