Методические указания к практическим занятиям

Lesson 1

Входной конроль Put the words in brackets in the possessive case using –‘s or of:

1.… is yellow. (color/ wall) 2. What is … (this man / the profession)? 3. The name of his wife. 4. The life of animals. 5. The new price of the goods. 6. The letter of the client. 7. The dress of my daughter. 8. When is … (birthday / your mother)? 9. Do you like … (the taste / this ice-cream)? 10. Look at the number at … (the bottom / the page). 11. What is … (the address / Mike)? 12 For me the summer is … (the best time / the year). 13. … is near the market (the house / my parents). 13. … is very good (the work / Mary). 14. What is … (the name / this man). 15. … very light (the room / my sister). 16. The post-office is at … (the end / the street). 17. I need … (the help / my friend). 18. … is very tasty (the filling / this pie).

Supply a singular or a plural verb where necessary.

1. I know my hair … beautiful, everybody says so (to be). 2. Maths … among the most important subjects at schools (to be). 3. My scissors … not very sharp. Can I borrow yours (to be)? 4. No news … good news (to be). 5.“There … money in my pocket,” I said to the porter. 6. Two hours … rather short to discuss all the problems like these (to be). 7. 50 dollars … enough to buy a cassette-player (to be). 8. Three miles … too far to walk on a nasty day like this (to be).

Put the verbs in brackets in the Present Simple.

1. … you (see) that man over there?

2. I’m hungry. I (want) something to eat.

3. … she (belong) to a political party?

4. Who is that man? What he (want)?

5. Do you know who (own) this house?

6. When … the film (start)?

7. It (not / rain) when the sun comes out.

Form the negative and interrogative sentences:

1. I like to read English books.

2. She often writes words and translates sentences.

3. Uncle Podge likes a little Job.

4. Tom McKenzy works for a newspaper.

5. I can read English books quite well.

6. In summer we usually go to the seaside.

Make questions (General, Special, Alternative, Tail-questions) to the following sentences.

  1. Peter has some problems with Maths.

  2. Mike says that University is the best thing in the world.

  3. Sandra always gets up early in the morning.

  4. Roger usually stays at the Continental Hotel when he is in Paris.

Use much, many, few, little, a few, a little, a lot of:

1.I have …questions to ask. 2. Is there … furniture in your cottage? 3. Is there … fruit in the vase? 4. Is there … coffee in the pot? 5. Has he … or … free time? 6. There were so … people in the room that we couldn’t move. 7. She is a quiet person. She doesn’t say… . 8. I put … salt in my soup, perhaps, too… . 9. I don’t think Pat would be a good teacher. She ‘s got … patience with children.10. There were … new books in the library. 11. James has got … work today. 12. Don’t put … milk into his coffee. 13. Is there … space in your room? – No, not very … .14. This town is not very well-known and there isn’t … to see, so … some tourists come here.

Fill the brackets with articles and possessive pronouns:

Jack London, (…) father of (…) family, left (…) farm and moved to(…) town . He tried a lot of trades, but couldn’t make enough money to send (…) children to (…) school. Jack London had to begin earning (…) living at (…) early age. He sold (…) morning and evening papers in (…) streets. At (…) age of fourteen he began working in (…) factory. He worked eighteen to twenty hours (…) day. Then he became (…) sailor. Jack London travelled (…) lot. He had to do (…) very hard work, but he also read (…) lot and tried to get (…) education.

Open the brackets and use the verbs in the Present Simple or Past Simple.

  1. They (to be) in London last month.

  2. Who of your friend (to speak) English?

  3. How many lessons you (to have) every day?

  4. I (not to be) at home yesterday, I (to go) for a walk.

  5. He usually (to sleep) well. But last night he (to sleep) bad.

  6. Your sister (to be) a doctor? – Yes, she (to become) a doctor two years ago.

  8. You (to get) up early on Sunday’s? – Yes. But last Sunday I (to sleep) till ten o’clock.

  9. When you (to leave) the meeting yesterday?

  11. Why your parents (to be) so angry last night? – Because my brother (to be) late.

Use the verbs in the Present or Past Indefinite Tense:

  1. His mother (to be) a housewife.

  2. They (to be) happy to see you now?

  3. You (to write) the test yesterday.

  4. She (not to go) to school. She (to be) ill.

  5. His brother (to come) yesterday? – No, he (not to come). He (to be) busy.

  6. They (to have) a nice weekend last week.

  7. Yesterday he (to get) home and (to take) his got for a walk.

  8. You often (to go) to the theatre? – Not very often.

Usually we (to go) there once a month.

  1. Why Susan (not to notice) us last night? – We (to be) in the shadow and she (not to see) us.

  2. What sister you (to like) better: cats or dogs.

Use the verbs in the Present Continuous or Present Simple:

1. I (to have a rest) now. I (to have a rest) every day.

2. They (to talk) now. They (to talk) every day.

3. He (to drink) coffee now. He (to drink) coffee every morning.

4. She (to go) to school now. She (to go) to school every day.

5. My baby (to sleep) at the moment. My baby (to sleep) every day.

6. Her son (to make) noise now. Her son (to make) noise every day.

7. Jane (not to cook) at the moment. Jane (not to cook) every day.

8. We (not to eat) now. We (not to eat) at work.

9. Nick (not to skate) now. Nick (not to skate) once a week.

10. You (not to work) at the moment. You (no to work) on Sundays.
