Методическое пособие (часть 1) состоит из пяти разделов (Units), каждый из которых посвящен определенной устной теме и включает в себя текст для изучающего чтения, текст для ознакомительного чтения, текст для просмотрового чтения и письменного перевода, лексические и грамматические упражнения, диалоги и ролевые игры, целью которых является развитие у студентов навыков чтения специальных оригинальных и адаптированных текстов, навыков устной речи и приобщение к некоторым аспектам профессии, а также Supplementary Reading – раздела, который содержит материал для дополнительного чтения. Тематика текстов соответствует учебному материалу по данной специальности.
Работа предназначена для студентов 2-го курса дневной формы обучения по специальности «Организация перевозок и управление на железнодорожном транспорте».

Введение
Предлагаемое учебное пособие на английском языке имеет своей целью развитие у студентов навыков чтения и перевода технических текстов по специальности, а также навыков устной речи и повышение профессиональных знаний.
В работе использован текстовой материал из источников Интернета, оригинальных американских учебных пособий и учебно-методических пособий ведущих железнодорожных вузов страны.
Пособие состоит из двух частей (PARTS). Первая часть (Part I), включающая 5 разделов (Units), посвящена введению в специальность инженера по организации перевозок и управлению на железнодорожном транспорте и описанию устройства и работы различных станций.
Каждый раздел первой части построен по одной схеме: текст для изучающего чтения (А), текст для ознакомительного чтения (В) и текст для просмотрового чтения и письменного перевода его части (С).
Упражнения и задания, включенные в пособие, носят творческий и коммуникативный характер, побуждая студентов к активному общению на английском языке в соответствии с ситуациями и ролями участников и их высказыванию по темам, соответствующим программе курса обучения по иностранному языку в вузе. Учтена методика и структура построения зарубежных учебных пособий для изучающих английский язык как иностранный.
В конце первой части пособия есть оригинальные тексты из журналов «Railway Gazette» для самостоятельного чтения.
Данное учебное пособие предназначено для студентов 2-го курса дневной формы обучения института УАиТ, специальность ОПУ, может также использоваться как учебный материал при работе со студентами дневного и заочного отделения в филиалах ДВГУПС.

I. Text . Operation, Automation and Telecommunication Institute

Railroad is one of the most important means of transportation. Every day thousands of freight and passenger trains speed along railroad tracks throughout the world. The railroads continue to play a decisive role in the political, economic and cultural ties between various territories within the Russian Federation too.
Nowadays, it is impossible to imagine the operation of railroad transport without means of automation. Making the work of transportation service control in the whole railroad transport system more efficient and safe requires highly skilled, competent, creative, technologically oriented engineers.
The "Operation, Automation and Telecommunication" (OA&T) Institute of the Far Eastern State Transport University trains such specialists in the field of automation, information science, microprocessor technology, communication and control systems in 5 specialities:
– automation, telemechanics and communication;
– information systems;
– fiber-optic transmission systems;
traffic organization and service control on railroads;
safety computer supply
The Institute is one of the oldest at the University and was founded in 1939 as the "Operational faculty". It grew in size and importance, and in 1993 the foundation of the Academy and then University resulted in structural changes. Thus, the "Operation, Automation and Telecommunication" Institute was established on the basis of two faculties: "Automation, Telemechanics and Communication" (AT&C) and "Operational faculty".
The students are provided with all the necessary opportunities to be trained highly-skilled engineers. They get deep theoretical knowledge and practical skills not only at well-equipped University laboratories, libraries, reading-halls and class-rooms, but also have practical training at computer centers, at railroad stations, terminals, signaling and communication divisions. Hostel accommodation, sports facilities, a polyclinic, workshops, a club and a canteen are at the students' disposal.
The development and installation of new automation, remote control and communication equipment at stations, marshaling yards, application of computing techniques for railroad operation has made it necessary to train specialists capable of operating modern techniques. That's why there are some research labs of computing technique at the faculty.
The curriculum is very complicated. It comprises a combination of traditional academic subjects for junior students: higher mathematics, physics, chemistry, foreign languages, social sciences, descriptive geometry, computing technique, practical training, elective subjects.
Senior students attend lectures and seminars on basic laws of developing automated control systems for operating railroad transport. They are based on electronic engineering, methods of efficient and reliable traffic running, principles of projecting and operating railroad stations, junctions, technology of freight and commercial service, information systems, etc.
Tuition may last from 4 to 5-6 years, depending upon the degree pursued. After receiving a Bachelor's degree the students may continue one or two more years for a Master's degree. This may be followed by a Doctor's degree, which normally requires 2 or 3 more years of studying and presenting a thesis.
The academic staff deliver lectures, conduct practical classes and consultations, supervise laboratory tests performed by the students in the well-equipped labs of specialized departments. Gifted students together with their tutors do research, presenting their reports at annual students' scientific conferences and submit term and diploma papers in foreign languages.
Students of the faculty are paid grants either directly by the University or by the organizations signing contracts with the University for training specialists required.
The speciality of an operational engineer of the main railroad line deals with the operation of trains running and freight and commercial service. This profession is extremely responsible and of great importance as the engineer carries out work in all branches of the transportation system. His functions are:
to design railroad stations, terminals, yards and junctions, using methods of complex projecting and rational layout of divisions, marshaling and freight yards and calculating throughput capacities of yards;
to control trains running, their arrival and departure according to the schedule;
to organize freight and passenger service, shunting operations, to carry out outgoing and incoming business, to coordinate maintenance of industrial sidings, to draw up documentation for freight movement, to provide storage of incoming freight, mechanization of handling operations and development of container traffic.
All this work is done by operational engineers, station masters and train dispatchers who apply modern means of automation and computing technique at large railroad stations, divisions and terminals of the Far East, Siberia and other parts of our country. The graduates of the faculty can also work as teachers and scientific workers in offices, operating departments, designing and training institutions of our city and country. Their work is very interesting.
