Personality theory

There is something inside people that makes them think, feel and act differently. And that “something inside” is what we mean by personality. It accounts for both the differences among people and for the consistencies in an individual’s behavior over time and in a variety of different situations. The Latin term “persona” means “actor’s face mask”. In a sense, one’s personality is the “mask” worn as a person moves from situation to situation during a lifetime.

The concept of personality has a number of characteristics, which are short-term in nature but relatively stable across time.

First characteristic of personality is that to be called a personality, a person’s behaviors should show some degree of consistency that distinguishes them from a person’s random responses to different stimuli. Though people change from day to day, from year to year - with age, experience and various shifts of fortune, they remain more or less what they are as time goes on.

A second characteristic of personality is that the behaviors should distinguish the person from others. In the 5^th century B.C. Hippocrates gave the description of four temperaments: sanguine (cheerful and active), melancholic (gloomy), choleric (angry and violent), and phlegmatic (calm and passive).

The specific attributes that define a person’s distinctions (for example, energetic versus lazy) are called personality traits. A trait is any characteristic in which one person differs from another in a relatively permanent and consistent way. Every trait can be used to classify people. A person’s personality may be described in terms of a particular combination of traits.

A third characteristic of personality is in that it interacts with the situation, and behavioral consistency may be obscured by the demands of the situations. A response of a person to a situation in which he finds himself is an emotion that does not come or goat will, but is initiated by certain perceptions and accompanies the emotional activity which is stimulated by the situation.
