Psychology as a science

Psychology was not considered something different from philosophy until the end of the 19th century, when it was established as a separate discipline. It has taken a good part of the 20th century for people to realize that psychology is as much a part of the basic skills they need for living and working as it is a field of academic study.

The word “psychology” is derived from the Greek words meaning “science of the mind and soul”. It may be defined as the study of behavior and mental processes. It covers everything that people think, feel, and do. As psychology studies behavior it deals with actions, emotions, ways of communication, developmental processes. As it examines mind it investigates learning, memory, thinking, language, and perception.

The scientific basis of psychology is its scientific method on which psychologists rely in their research. The scientific method means that psychologists reach their conclusions by identifying a specific problem or question, formulating a hypothesis, collecting data through observation and experiment, and analyzing the data.

Some psychologists believe that psychology should study only behavior that can be seen, observed or measured directly. Other psychologists consider that our fantasies, thoughts, and feelings are also important kinds of human behavior, even though these behaviors are not directly observed. However all of them agree that the study of behavior must be systematic and has four goals - describe, explain, predict, and control behavior.

General principles of psychology are to enable specialists to investigate human development throughout the life span from birth to death, examine mental and physical health care, treat people who are emotionally distressed.
