Вопросы, которые всегда задают

What were you doing when Tom rang? – I was reading a paper.	Что ты делал, когда позвонил Том? – Я читал газету.

И снова маленькие коварные слова

На этот раз мы познакомимся со словами-связками (linking words). Они служат для того, чтобы связывать мысли, части предложений и делать речь более точной, логичной и выразительной.

That/which/who/whose – который, чей whereas/while – в то время как because – потому что because of – из-за due to – благодаря (чему), из-за that’s why – вот почему so – так, итак, поэтому as/since – поскольку therefore – следовательно compared to – по сравнению с either… or – либо…либо neither… nor – ни… ни provided – при условии

of course - конечно first of all – прежде всего firstly/secondly – во-первых/во-вторых finally - наконец however – однако although/though – хотя nevertheless – несмотря ни на что unlike – в отличие от thus – таким образом actually – на самом деле anyway – в любом случае, во всяком случае basically – в принципе by the way – кстати fortunately – к счастью unfortunately – к несчастью on the other hand - с другой стороны on top of that – самое главное

Упражнение 1. Прочитайте и переведите рассказ. Подчеркните слова-связки. Выделите глаголы, употребленные в Past Continuous.

I walked along the street. It was Mardi Gras, so a lot of people were dancing and singing. Fortunately I saw a police officer and asked him where I was. He laughed, and said “Basically you are in Basin Street. And you should go easy on the beer. It’s only noon.” I kept on walking though I felt nervous. Actually I was sure that someone was following me. Finally I turned around suddenly. Two men were standing right behind me. They got out a map and looked at it. I went over to them and asked how to get to Jackson Square. Of course they pretended not to understand me, and answered me in bad English. So I kept on walking. By the way when I turned around again they were still behind me, but they were looking at the poster on a wall. Nevertheless I continued walking. Then I saw the woman again. She was standing against a wall. She was smoking a cigarette. However when she saw me she disappeared round a corner. I ran after her. Suddenly, from nowhere, someone shouted “Hey, Johnny… Johnny Damone”. When I turned, someone hit me over the head with the lead of a trashcan. Anyway I realized that I had to leave town.

Упражнение 3. Представьте, что вас просят сделать что-то такое, что вы сделать не можете или не считаете нужным. Нужно уметь грамотно отказаться. Назовите три причины для отказа в каждой из перечисленных ниже просьб. Начните свою речь приблизительно так:
