The possessive case: Whose?

1. The + a noun + of + the + a noun: the hat of the mother

2. A noun + ’s: the mother’s hat; but in the plural form we use only ‘: the boys’ toys

В притяжательном падеже употребляются: Имена собственные и одушевленные существительные;	Jane’s friend, Mr. Smith’s car, the student’s test, the girls’ names, women’s clothes, Dickens’s books, etc.
Составные существительные и имена, состоящие из нескольких слов;	Sister-in-law’s marriage, the Prince of Wale’s family, Henry the Eighth’s wife, etc.
Два лица и более, обладатели одного предмета;	Jack and Susan’s flat, Bill and Tom’s bicycle, etc.
Группа слов, представляющих одно смысловое целое;	My younger sister Ann’s daughter, etc.
Слова: house, office, shop часто опускаются после существительного в притяжательном падеже;	At my friend’s, at my uncle’s, at the chemist’s, etc.
Страны, города, суда, а также слова world, country, city, ship;	America’s students, London’s theaters, the ship’s crew, the country’s policy, the world’s championship, etc.
Название времен года и месяцев;	Summer’s holydays(but spring/summer/autumn/winter weather), May’s days, etc.
Существительные обозначающие время и расстояние;	A month’s holyday, a mile’s distance, ten days’ rest, etc.
