Причастие (Participle)
В английском языке различаются причастие I (Participle I, или причастие настоящего времени, действительное причастие) и причастие II (Participle II, или причастие прошедшего времени, страдательное причастие).

(The Present Participle) соответствует русскому причастию действительного залога настоящего времени и деепричастию несовершенного вида.
Resting - отдыхающий, отдыхая.
Причастие настоящего времени (Participle I):
Participle I образуется от глагола путем прибавления суффикса -ing: to read – reading, to play – playing. Оно употребляется в функции определения и обстоятельства.
В функции определения Participle I приближается к прилагательному, причем оно всегда выражает одновременность действия с глаголом-сказуемым и переводится на русский язык причастиями с суффиксами: -ущ, -ющ, -ащ, -ящ:
The man reading the book is my friend. Человек, читающий книгу, мой друг.
Если Participle I в функции обстоятельства выражает действие, одновременное действию, выраженному глаголом-сказуемым, то тогда оно соответствует в русском языке деепричастию от глагола несовершенного вида, оканчивающемуся на –а, -я (крича, играя):
Going home I met my friend. Идя домой, я встретил своего друга.
Если Participle I выражает действие, предшествовавшее действию глагола-сказуемого, то тогда в русском языке оно соответствует деепричастию от глагола совершенного вида, оканчивающемуся на –а, -я (увидя) или на –в, -вши (сказав, сказавши):
She went to bed saying “good-night”. Она пошла спать, сказав «спокойной ночи».
Причастие прошедшего времени (Participle II).
Participle II правильных глаголов образуется при помощи прибавления суффикса –ed, а неправильных – путем чередования звуков в корне:
To ask – asked; to write – written; to spend – spent.
Оно употребляется в качестве определения, соответствуя в русском языке причастиям, оканчивающимся на –мый, -нный, -тый;

Participle II употребляется:
в функции обстоятельства причины и времени:
Caught red-handed Tom couldn’t retreat.

Пойманный на месте преступления (так как его поймали…), Том не мог отступать. |
Asked if he would go there, he didn’t say anything. |
Когда его спросили, пойдет ли он туда, он ничего не сказал.

The vase is broken. Ваза разбита.
