Модальные глаголы (Modal Verbs)
can, may, must, ought, should, would.
Модальные глаголы не обозначают действия или состояния, а выражают отношение к ним. В группу они объединены из-за ряда особенностей:
Модальные глаголы не спрягаются, т.е. не изменяются по лицам и числам.
После себя требуют инфинитива смыслового глагола без частицы «to» (только после глагола ought употребляется инфинитив с частицей «to»).
Не имеют неличных форм: инфинитива, герундия и причастия.
Can – имеет значение мочь, уметь, обладать физической или умственной способностью, умением выполнять действие, выраженное инфинитивом глагола, с которым can сочетается.
He can read English.
Can he read English?
He cannot (can’t) read English.
Глагол may переводится на русский язык «мочь, сметь» и выражает моральную возможность; вероятность разрешения выполнять действия.
They may go home.
May they go home?
They may not go home.
Ты можешь идти домой.
Глагол must выражает долженствование, необходимость, моральную обязанность и соответствует в русском языке словам «должен», «нужно», «надо».
You must study better.
Must I go there?
Вы должны учиться лучше.
Глагол ought имеет значение моральной необходимости, рекомендации совершения действия и сам употребляется для выражения настоящего и прошедшего времени:
I ought to visit my sick friend more often.
Глагол should передает необходимость совершения какие-либо действия и приближается к значению ought:
You should speak more distinctly.
Вам нужно бы говорить пояснее.
Глагол would передает желание или вежливое обращение:
Would you mind telling me the time?
Не скажите ли Вы мне, который час?
