It had been my dream in high school to study in Oryel State University. My dream came true, good luck! I was admitted to the University. I managed to cope with entrance examinations requirements in all exams subjects. The competition was very tough. Now I am a second-year student of the History Faculty at the Oryel State University. I study by correspondence as I combine work and studies.

There are many historical subjects in our programme: Ancient History, the Middle Ages, Modern and contemporary History, etc. History interests me as a science because it helps people understand and explain the processes going on in various aspects of human life. It also helps people foresee the course of events in future. But it is impossible to study any particular period of history if one doesn’t know a lot about what preceded it and what came after it. “Historia est magistra vitae”, said an ancient philosopher.

Of course, I meet with great difficulties in my studies. Instruction includes different assignments with due dates and the exams schedule. I just need to follow weekly schedule of lectures and assignments. All the students who study by correspondence work and learn on their own to master the subject material. So I should read a lot of scientific literature and spend a lot of time in the library. My group-mates help me to cope with my troubles. They often stay after lectures, explaining to me the most complicated problems of different subjects, including English grammar. I have already enlarged my English vocabulary and now I can understand English texts rather well. Besides, we are making oral and written abstracts of the English texts and it is a very difficult home assignment for me so far. But the most important aspect of studying by correspondence is that students can go at their own pace i. e. study anywhere, anytime.

I think that the profession of a historian is quite diversified. The graduates of our Faculty can work as teachers and research workers at secondary and higher schools, different museums and archives or continue their studies at the Postgraduate Courses. Many of them have become well-known scientists or have chosen public activity as their career.

Whether I shall make a good teacher or become successful in some other field of social life remains to be seen. But I am sure that my knowledge received at the University will help me succeed in my future work.
