Before you read.
Discuss the following questions.
How do you understand the term ‘order processing’?
Can you think of any types of order processing?
What affects order processing time?
Part 1. Defining Order Processing.
The time needed to complete the activities of the order cycle is at the very heart of customer service. The activities associated with order preparation, transmittal, entry, and filling represent 50 to 70 percent of the total order cycle time in many industries. Therefore, if a high level of customer service is to be provided through short and consistent order cycle times, it is essential that these order processing activities be carefully managed.
Over the years, the cost of providing timely and accurate information throughout the supply chain has dropped dramatically, whereas the costs of labour and materials have risen. Because of this, there have been increasing efforts to substitute resources with information.
Order processing is represented by the following activities: order preparation, order transmittal, order entry, order filling, and order status reporting. The time required to complete each activity depends on the type of ordering involved.
