41. What are the most read teen magazines?

Teens will always be concerned with the same stuff – fashion, movie stars, music and sports. However, life today is not that simple. AIDS (when the body’s immune system is not working), drugs, drinking and the weakening of the ozone layer are some of the problems that concern young people today. So what does it take American teens to be in on the latest trends and fashions? What do they read to keep up to date?

Readers of Seventeen are usually high-school or college girls who are more concerned about learning how to have a relationship with a normal guy than about what their favorite TV star had for breakfast. In its pages, you can find articles like “Planet Power” (how to save the Earth); “Body Ecology” (natural make-up, healthy hair); “Great Sports”.

There are a lot more ads for fashion and less for skin creams. There isn’t any star-gazing here and not much confidential chatter. Indeed, where Sassy and Teen try to act as pal, parent, fashion consultant and doctor, Seventeen gives greater independence to its audience. It’s for the teen in transition, girls who are preparing to read Vogue, Cosmopolitan and other more mature women’s magazines.

So far it seems like girls are the only ones who read magazines. But look in the opposite direction and you’ll find Sports Illustrated For Kids. This is one of the most popular youth magazines to be published in years. It covers top athletes and top sports with short and colorful articles. It is a combination of magazine and colorful book.

So just what are American teens learning from these magazines? Sassy editor Jane Pratt says, “Being a teenager is such a troubling time... At the same time, there’s that feeling that anything is possible and that you will live forever”. Idealism is practically synonymous with being a teenager. This is what makes being a teen so exciting, confusing and dangerous.

Nevertheless, there is the reality of the 1990s – drugs, fatal drunk-driving accidents and AIDS. Therefore, behind all the make-up hints and movie reviews, there are serious things too. These magazines educate and inform teens about health care. After all, AIDS doesn’t care about your clothes or your dreams for the future.

42. What does european community mean to britain?

Overseas trade has been very important to Britain’s economy for hundreds of years. In the past, its trade was centered on the Commonwealth and the United States. Joining the European Community brought many changes. Britain joined the EC in 1973 and became one of the 12 countries of the bloc. As an EC member, Britain could buy goods from other EC member countries at a reduced rate. Today the Commonwealth is not as important to Britain as it was in the past. Britain’s relationship with Europe now takes first place. Britain’s decision to join the EC was mainly for political reasons. Britain wanted to become part of Europe. It was also useful for economic reasons. The Single European Market offers British companies a market of over 350 million customers.

The Government believes that a productive, competitive European Community with a single market in goods and free movement of labor at its heart is essential for high living standards and employment. The EC takes account of the realities of employment patterns and practices in 12 very different member states. They believe in the idea of Community action to ease the free movement of workers and to protect high standards of health and safety at work. The Government welcomes joint action with Britain’s Community partners when it makes sense to act together.

Although total national product per head fell in the early 1980s, Britain later returned to a strong economic position and had eight successive years of economic growth. The increase between 1980 and 1990 was higher than in all major EC countries. In the early 1990s, Britain and many other countries were affected by the economic depression. Total national product fell in Britain in 1991 by 2.5%.

A new development which will bring Britain closer to its European partners is the Channel Tunnel or “Chunnel”, which was completed in 1993. It links the British and French motorway systems so that travel and trade between the two countries is much easier. Britain’s second most important trading partner after the EC is the USA. The two countries share a common language and have strong cultural and historical ties. Britain receives more tourists from the USA than from any other country.
