Text “I couldn't live without my computer at home”

Part I.

My name is Kate. I use my computer all the time. It is like a typewriter and address book for me and it is also used for checking my spelling. Besides I can go on the Internet and discover everything about anything, it's a brilliant source of information. I've designed my own website and I'm getting loads of information for school. Besides some websites are packed with quizzes, games and competitions, it's ail you need for hours of fun on your computer. You can play and learn on it. It is absolutely essential. I don't know how I ever managed without it.

But my elder sister thinks people are getting a bit too dependent on computers. She thinks that we rely on them too much. My sister says, "You can't rely on all; the information, you don't know who it has been written by or where it's coming from. To be dependent on anything, especially a lifeless machine, that can quite easily break down, is not good. Besides computers shouldn't replace seeing your friends".

Part II. Computers

Most people use their computers for sending and receiving e-mails and for word-processing (= writing letters, reports, etc.). You can also use the Internet,

рlay computer games or watch DVDs. You log in/on with your username and password. You type in words on a keyboard and print out documents on a printer.

Information is displayed on the screen and you select the icons (= small pictures or symbols) using a mouse. Data (~ information) is stored in files on the hard disk, or on a floppy disk or CD-ROM.

The programs that are used to operate a computer are called software. A computer that you use at work or home is a PC or desktop. A laptop is a small computer that you can carry around with you.

Part III. The Internet

If you want to use the Internet, you need a computer with a modem. If you don't have Internet access at home, you can go to a cybercafé to surf the Net. In order to visit a website, you need to type in a URLAveb address (for example, www.oup.com/elt said "double-u double-u double-u dot o-u-p dot com slash e-1- f).

If you want to find information about something on the Internet, but you don't know where to look it up, you can do a search using a search engine. You can buy things online, join a discussion in a chat room, post questions on a message board, or download music (but be careful you don't get a virus!).
