My Plans for the Future

Read the following text to answer the questions:

2. Why have you decided to become a lawyer/ economist/Customs officer?

4. What do you know about your (future) profession/occupation?

5. Are you sure of your choice?

There are a lot of interesting and useful professions. It is not an easy task to choose one out of hundreds possible. The end of school is the beginning of one’s independent life, the beginning of a far more serious examination of person’s abilities and character.

For example, a lawyer protects the innocent and fights with criminals. It is a very noble profession. A lawyer must know the psychology of people, their inner world and state. Lawyers are responsible to people as many people’s destinies depend on them.

I n 2009 I applied to the faculty of the Customs Business of the Customs Academy as I want to work at the Customs. I think that the profession of a Customs officer is one of the most important in our country.

The duty of a Customs officer is not only to punish people for various Customs violations such as: smuggling of goods, narcotics, arms and other contraband. They also collect Customs duties, prevent smuggling, control persons and articles entering and departing the state.

My friend applied to the Economic faculty of the Customs Academy. He has chosen this job because he wants to get a lot of knowledge about Customs economy. It is very interesting to him.

Economics tries to determine means of regulating the economy, methods of programming, ways of analyzing economic processes, problems of business organizations. Customs revenues provide the income to the federal budget.

And now I’d like to tell you about the Customs.

The current Russian word for Customs “tamozhnya” originated from a Tatar word “tamga”, which meant “a customs tax”.

The main tasks of the Russian Customs Service are to protect the economic interests of Russia and preserve national treasures and cultural and historical properties.

The Russian Customs Service is currently carrying out fiscal functions, regulation of foreign trade by means of tariff and non-tariff methods, law enforcement, collection and keeping of Customs statistics concerning foreign trade.

A lso I’d like to add that Customs legislation in Russia is based on “The Customs Code of the Russian Federation” and the law “On Customs Tariffs”. All provisions and regulations in these documents meet world standards.

Now I want to tell how the Russian Customs Service works. It has a complex infrastructure. It is headed by the Federal Customs Service. The day-to-day operation of customs offices and border checkpoints is supervised by Regional Customs Departments.

Finally I’d like to say that the Russian Customs Service needs a proper legal environment, well trained personnel, Hi-tech equipment and simplified procedures.

I’d like to know more about the Customs and then in future I will be a good Customs officer.
