Geographical names with or without articles

We don’t use the definite article with the names of the continents, countries, states, cities, towns, villages, lakes. But we say the with names of countries and states which include words like “republic, union, kingdom, states”. We also use the definite article with plural names.

Island groups, mountain ranges usually have plural names with the. But individual islands, mountains usually have singular names without the definite article.

Names of oceans, seas, rivers, canals have the definite article.

We don’t normally use the definite article with the names of streets, roads, squares. Many names (for example, of airports or universities) consist of two words: Kennedy Airport, Cambridge University. The first word is usually the name of a person or a place. We don’t usually say the in these cases.

We usually use the definite article before the names of hotels, restaurants, pubs, theatres, cinemas, museums, galleries. Many shops, restaurants, hotels, banks etc. are named after the people who started them. These names end in s or ‘s and we don’t use the. We say the before the names of places, buildings etc. with of the Bank of England.

We use the definite article with the names of newspapers.
