Grammar Definite article

We don’t use the when we mean something in general. When we mean something in particular, we use the definite article.

I love flowers (in general, not a particular group of flowers). I like your garden. The flowers are beautiful (the flowers in your garden, not flowers in general)

Prison, school, university, college, church, bed, work, home

We don’t use the when we are thinking of the idea of these places and what they are used for.

After I leave school, I want to go to university (as a pupil/student).

Will you be at home tomorrow?

It’s time to go to bed now.

There is no preposition with go/come/get/arrive home. We say “be in prison”, but usually “be at school/ university/ college. “In church” and “at church” are both possible.
