2. the antenna; 13. components;

3. oscillations; 14. wave components;

4. frequency; 15. the ion;

5. weak; 16. the ionosphere;

6. a small part of energy; 17. a long distance;

7. to leave; 18. possible;

9. in all directions; 20. free oscillations;

10. at a great speed; 21. to vibrate;

11. in the high frequency part; 22. in the same way.

Ex. II. Listen to the text.

Ex. III. Answer the following questions:

1. Why are the oscillations in the antenna weak?

2. What speed do radio waves travel at?

3. Where do radio waves travel short distances?

4. What energy does a radio wave give off in the ionosphere?

Ex. IV. Give Russian equivalents to the following noun-groups:

1. a receiver antenna;

2. a transmitter antenna;

3. antenna oscillations;

4. wave propagation;

5. a radio spectrum;

6. a radio spectrum high frequency part;

7. wave components;

8. the ionosphere wave components;

9. long-distance communication;

10. short-distance communication.

Ex. V. Say the following numerals in English:

1.1-11-111; 2.2-12-20; 3.3-13-30; 4.5-15-50; 5. 8-18-80; 6. 1,235; 7. 12,456; 8. 3,567; 9. 4,678; 10.5,789; 11.6,005; 12.90,876; 13.10,234,560,000.

Ex. VI. Say the following dates:

1. в 1870; 2. в 1978: 3. в 1980: 4. в 1805: 5. в 1900;

6. в 1985; 7. в 2000; 8. в 1945; 9. в 1930; 10. 5 сентября

13. 22 мая 1870 г.; 14. 1 марта 1979 г.; 15. 23 февраля 1985 г.

Ex. VII. Say the following decimals:

0.7; 1.235: 2.678; 35.789; 45.006; 0.35; 12.79:

Ex. VIII. Write down the Cardinal and Ordinal numerals as in the Model:

four — the fourth; two — the second. Now do it yourself:

один — первый; три — третий; пять — пятый; шесть — шестой; десять — десятый; одиннадцать — одиннадцатый; двенадцать — двенадцатый; двадцать семь — двадцать седьмой; девяносто два — девяносто второй; пятьдесят пять — пятьдесят пятый; сто — сотый; тысяча — тысячный.

Ex. IX. Use the third person singular in the following sentences as in the Model:

Radio waves travel short distances. A radio wave travels short distances. Now do it yourself:

1. Radio waves come to the antenna of a receiver.

2. Radio waves give off their electromagnetic energy to the free electrons.

3. The free electrons begin to vibrate.

Ex. X. Make the following sentences negative and interrogative:

1. Radio waves leave this part of the spectrum.

2. It travels short distances in that part of the radio spectrum.

Ex. XI. Ask special questions beginning which special interrogative words as in the Model:

These waves leave the antenna. What ...? What do these waves do? What do these waves leave? Now do it yourself:

1. They make oscillations of the same frequency. (What ...? What oscillations ...?);

2. It travels long distances. (What ...? What distances ...?);

3. It comes to the ionosphere. (Where ...?)

Ex. XII. Say if you agree or not to the following statements using correspondingly: you are right — верно; you are not quite right — неверно.

1. Radio waves travel with the velocity of light.

2. The oscillations in the antenna are strong.

3. A radio wave imparts its electromagnetic energy to the free electrons of the ionosphere;
