Современная женщина – занимающая важные должности, стремящаяся к профессиональному продвижению, делящая обязанности по воспитанию детей с мужем, а зачастую и незамужняя – вызывает восхищение у одних и неудовольствие у других. Стремление женщины обеспечить себе лидирующие позиции в разных областях жизни началось с движения суфражисток, требовавших наделить женщин правом голосовать. Сейчас женщины не только голосуют, но и баллотируются от крупнейших партий на высокие государственные посты.

Несмотря на эти достижения, различия в положении полов сохраняются. Различаются, например, средние заработки мужчин и женщин. Возникают новые конфликты, связанные с тем, что многие мужчины в корне не согласны с новой ролью женщины. Они считают, что профессиональное продвижение женщины разрушает семейную жизнь, и находят традиционную роль женщины более вознаграждающей. Затруднительное положение женщин, несущих на себе двойной груз домашних и профессиональных забот, привело к попыткам создать более гибкие рабочие условия, ослабляющие давление на работающих замужних женщин/

Roles 1,2. You are Democrats working in Congress/government (pp. 152-153, 154-156, 162-163, 164). You are concerned about low voter turnout. You want to tell voters about your work in Congress/government and win their support.

Roles 3,4. You are Republicans working in Congress/government (pp. 153-154, 159-160, 164). You are also worried that US citizens are politically uninvolved. You speak about your achievements in the legislative/executive field and want to attract more voters.

Roles 5,6. You are lobbyists representing different interest groups (pp. 157-158). Your task is to persuade both parties in the nterest you represent. You listen to the Democrats and the Republicans and choose a different tactic adressing them.

Roles 7,8. You are ordinary US citizens. You hesitate which party to support. You listen to the arguements of both parties and their dealing with the lobbyists and decide which party you will vote for. You must support your decision with arguements.
