Ничто не может затмить настоящее искусство, и американцы любят его. Несмотря на незначительное государственное финансирование, количество культурных учреждений в США растет, а искусство процветает и вдохновляет творческих людей. В сфере визуальных искусств художники и скульпторы стремятся выразить всепроникающее влияние массовой культуры. Так появился жанр «поп-арт». В сфере музыки большую популярность приобрели исконно американские формы и стили. Некоторые из них сейчас достигли пика своей популярности и привлекают все больше поклонников по всему миру, но из-за этого они подверглись сильной коммерциализации. Современный американский балет стремиться найти новые формы для передачи глубинных чувств человека через танец.

В развитие всех видов искусств вмешалось телевидение. Несмотря на это, инновации в сфере искусств продолжают обогащать культурную жизнь Америки и оказывают влияние на весь остальной мир.

3. Role play (see Part b, pp. 266-275).

Role 1. You are a television journalist. You consider television the most important mass medium. You highly appreciate its role in forming public opinion and disagree vehemently with those who believe that television destroys everything (see pp.266-268).

Role 2. You are a professor studying the impact and role of television. You agree with the journalist that the role of TV in the society is huge. However, your study of TV programming shows that the great bulk of it is designed for mass entertainment and opposed to news, information and education. You find it worrying (see p.269).

Role 3. You are an Americant parent. You are concerned that TV has become “the third parent” in most American families. You share the view that the quality of many programmes is poor and think that parents must pay closer attention to what TV can teach youngsters (pp.272-273).

Role 4. You are a politician. You recognize the power of television and its ability to sway public opinion and form an image. However, you are worried that viewers are often deceived by the image of some politicians created by TV journalists (see pp. 274).

Roles 5-8. You are ordinary TV viewers. Express your opinion on the role of television and agree or disagree with other participants of the play.
