41) Wiliam Shakespeare Contribution
William
Shakespeare is probably the greatest man of drama in the world. But
still we know little about his life. He was born in
Stratford-upon-Avon. He began his career with writing some sonnets…..
He
came to London where he became an actor, a playwright and a
shareholder of one of the leading theatres. His early works varied:
comedies, tragedies, love sonnets. Later he wrote historical
chronicles where he described the events of the English history which
were more important than the characters. In 1592 London theatres were
closed because of plague, they didn’t open for 2 years. Theatrical
companies went on tours but it’s unknown whether Shakespeare went
with them. But when the theatres opened he produced the best of his
works: Hamlet; Macbeth; Othello; Romeo and Juliette; King Lear. In
his tragedies he directed his attention not to the plot itself but to
the greatness of man’s sorrow. After that probably Shakespeare felt
that he had no urge to write, so he left London and came back to his
native town where he lived in quite obscurity to his last days. He
didn’t care for preservation of his works. So the 1st
collection of his sonnets came out in 1623 (7 years after his death).
