Geoinformation systems in the earth sciences Creation of Database of typomorphic-mineralogical properties of ti-zr placer minerals (db tmp tzpm)

Database are one of the multifunctional systems, in which we can collect, save and process data. Also it can be used as expert system to find out what group in database some sample can belong to. It is very important to singled out the most impornant informative typomorphic-mineralogical properties of Ti-Zr placer minerals to reconstruction lithology-facial conditions of placer forming.

Our research team has field investigations on Ti-Zr placer deposits of West Siberia placer province and collected samples which characterize facial zoning of Umytia and Ordynskaya deposits during 2010 year.

We studied 16 samples from 5 facial zones for the Database of typomorphic-mineralogical properties of Ti-Zr placer minerals (DB TMP TZPM). We used electronic microscope and microsonde analyses for studying of 300 mineral grains of placer-forming minerals.

Structure of DB TMP TZPM consists of: coordinates of the researched point; stratigraphic level of the deposits; structure-facial zone of the sample; granulometric content; mineralogical content of heavy fraction; typomorphic features of placer-forming minerals, such as primary and secondary shape, roundness, fragmentation, re-crystallization and secondary neogenic minerals; chemical content of main grains and secondary neogenic minerals; atlas of photos and energy-dispersion spectrums of the minerals classified by facial zoning and typomorphic features.

Revealed features of placer minerals allow tracing transformation both the mineral associations of the placer field and typomorphic features of the placer forming minerals (so called “microfacial characteristics”) within the placer-forming formation “intermediate host – fluvial paleochannel – paleodelta – lithoral zone of paleobasin – coastal shallow sea zone”. These features are: granulometric content of heavy fraction of the deposits as index of dynamics of sedimentation conditions; structure of the mineral content of the deposits estimates with factor analysis (method of the principal components); typomorphic featues of placer-forming minerals and degree of secondary hypergenic changes that are different in different facial zones.

We reveled that microfacial characteristics allows determination and mapping of facial zoning of the deposits. This conclusion has important application meaning. Without using of lithology-facial information the exploration of complex heavy mineral Ti-Zr placer deposits use random net of drilling hopes that rise the exploration work in price.

Possibility of determination of the facial zoning of the placer field on the base of limited geological information is important especially for exploration of buried placer deposits studies with drilling sampling, where traditional methods of texture analysis is impossible.
