3.0 Industry Analysis

The internet cafe industry is one of the most profit making industries in the world because today, there is satellite access to European Satellite internet providers all over Nigeria. There are 6 or more public cyber cafes in the most towns of Nigeria that are owned and operated privately. Hundreds of thousands of young people, are getting the internet access from their WAP-enabled mobile phones, smartphones and from their PCs using their phones as a modem, reflect the importance and necessity of internet connectivity in the country. That‘s mainly owing to the introduction of General Packet Radio Service (or GPRS) connectivity by the GSM operators. Therefore Internet use is supported even in some of the more rural parts of the country. Owing to this fact Nigerian citizens can not only to communicate with the rest of the country and the rest of the world from areas that had been completely cut off, but they are also getting used to the modern communications such as GSM, SMS and e-mail.

Most of the Nigerian sites are registered under the .ng and .com.ng domains that cost N599 per two year contract. Well, it’s expensive enough for a country with development level like Nigeria has.

3.1 The internet cafe industry

As internet users are increasingly and rapidly improving, the internet cafe industry is on a growth because new awareness is being created by broadband availability and associated advertising on mainstream media platforms. The internet cafe has become the most popular choice of connection used by Internet Cafés around the country. And the competition between Internet access providers is driving down the prices.

    1. Industry size

A recent report by NaijaCom, the Association of the Computer and Multimedia Industry, revealed that the ICT industry will grow less than 10 percent in 2005, down from 15 percent recorded last year. Total ICT spending, which includes computer hardware, software, services and communications, is projected to reach N12 billion (USN75 million) this year, up from N7 billion (USN43 million) in 2004.

A technology vendor told Africa’s Ovation that the government sector is not spending enough to stimulate the ICT industry. "These days, we don’t see as many government projects as before. One should take a good look at what the authorities are doing over in other country," he said.

Nigeria's public sector IT spending is expected to see a significant increase this year. Local authorities plan to call for N2.2 billion (USN13.75 million) worth of IT tenders over the next 12 months. The amount is a three-fold increase from the previous year.

In contrast, government IT spending in Nigeria has been on a decline since 2002. In 2002, government IT spending dropped from N450 million (USN28 million) to N360 million (USN22.5 million) in 2003. Last year, the figure fell even further.
