Each day usually begins with breakfast. In England people eat breakfast somewhere between six and nine o’clock in the morning; it depends how early their working day starts. Breakfast is usually a big meal in English families: porridge or cornflakes with milk, sugar and fruit, bacon and eggs, pancakes, toasts with butter and jam and lots of tea. If they had no time to eat breakfast because they were in a hurry, they can have brunch, which is something between breakfast and lunch. Brunch can also be a buffet meal eaten at official receptions. Buffet lunch usually consists of salads, sandwiches of all kinds, potato chips, fruit, juice or coke.
In offices and schools there are elevenses or a coffee break at about eleven o’clock, during which people usually have coffee with biscuits or cakes. Then comes lunch, which is generally at one o’clock. Lunch isn’t a big meal; it is often eaten at work: a sandwich or two, a hamburger or a hot dog, a banana or an apple, yoghurt, fruit juice or mineral water.
Afternoon tea, or five o’clock tea, you can hardly call a meal; it is a social sort of thing, as friends meet to socialize and talk while they have their cup of tea cake or biscuit. But the main meal of the day is dinner, of course. They have dinner at seven or seven thirty when all the members of the family come home from work or school. Dinner is a hot meal with meat or fish and plenty of vegetables, followed by an apple pie, pudding or any other sweet dish and tea. In England they seldom eat soup, once or twice a week. They like tomato, mushroom or onion soup, but their soup is different from ours. It is not thick, and there are very few potatoes or vegetables in it.
In some families dinner is a midday meal, then in the evening between six and seven they have supper: salad, an omelet or cold meat and coffee or tea to finish with.
