Контрольне завдання № 1

Read the text. Choose the correct answer (A, B, C or D). The first statement has been done for you. Mark your answers on the separate answer sheet.

Scientists at Stanford University made a broad statement that organic food is neither healthier nor safer for people than regular food. Notably, this survey is the most ambitious project in the department and includes data published in scientific literature over last 46 years.

Organic food(grown without any chemicals, hormones, antibiotics, etc.) is usually marketed by its producers as healthier and safer than conventional comestibles, arguing that apples grown without pesticides, for example, contain more vitamins, minerals and other wholesome substances. Heavy promotion of “healthy products” in Western countries has led to their becoming extremely popular despite their more expensive(organic products often cost twice as much as their more industrial brethren).

However, Stanford researches see no reason for such a craze, having discovering that a high content of phosphorous is the only thing making organic products stand out. In fact, these scientists firmly reject all affirmations that claim organic food contains more vitamins that other food. Protein and fat content in organic and regular milk also was approximately on the same level. Many consumers assume that organic pork and chicken lower the risk of resistance to antibiotics, but this has never proved clinically. It is noteworthy that the American scientists are not the only ones doubting organic food’s nutritional value: three years ago experts at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, a public research university a constituent college of the University of London came to similar conclusions.

Контрольне завдання № 2

Read the text .Define whether the following statements are true (T) or false (F). The first statement has been done for you. Mark your answer on the separate answer sheet.

Early consumers interested in organic food would look for non-chemically treated, non-use of unapproved pesticides, fresh or minimally processed food. They mostly had to buy directly from growers: "Know your farmer, know your food" was the motto. Personal definitions of what constituted "organic" were developed through firsthand experience: by talking to farmers, seeing farm conditions, and farming activities. Small farms grew vegetables (and raised livestock) using organic farming practices, with or without certification, and the individual consumer monitored. As demand for organic foods continued to increase, high volume sales through mass outlets such as supermarkets rapidly replaced the direct farmer connection. Today there is no limit to organic farm sizes and many large corporate farms currently have an organic division. However, for supermarket consumers, food production is not easily observable, and product labeling, like "certified organic", is relied on. Government regulations and third-party inspectors are looked to for assurance.

The USDA carries out routine inspections of farms that produce USDA Organic labeled foods. On April 20, 2010, the Department of Agriculture said that it would begin enforcing rules requiring the spot testing of organically grown foods for traces of pesticides, after an auditor exposed major gaps in federal oversight of the organic food industry.

Контрольне завдання № 3

Read the text. Choose the word that best fits each space. Put the correct letter (a, b, c or d) for each sentence. The first statement has been done for you. Mark your answer on the separate answer sheet.

Biotechnology in one form or another has flourished since prehistoric times. When the first human beings realized that they (1) plant their own crops and breed their own animals, they learned to use biotechnology. The discovery that fruit juices fermented into (2), or that milk could be converted (3) cheese or yogurt, or that beer could be made by (4) solutions of malt and hops began the study of biotechnology. When the first bakers found that they could make a (5), spongy bread rather than a firm, thin cracker, they were acting as fledgling biotechnologists. The (6) animal breeders, realizing that different physical traits could be either magnified or lost by mating appropriate pairs of animals, engaged (7) the manipulations of biotechnology.

What then is biotechnology? The term brings to (8) many different things. Some think of developing new types of animals. Others dream of almost (9) sources of human therapeutic drugs. Still others envision the possibility of growing crops that are more nutritious and naturally pest-resistant to feed a rapidly (10) world population. This question elicits almost as many first-thought responses as there are people to whom the question can be posed.

Biotechnology in one form or another has flourished (0) prehistoric times.
