AIM AND OBJECTIVES

Semantic and pragmatic features of metaphor as a means of speech manipulation in the political discourse

The aim of the project is to provide an integrated classification of metaphor and give a comprehensive analysis of the semantic and pragmatic peculiarities of metaphor as a means of speech manipulation in political discourse.

This aim presupposes the solution of the following tasks:

- to characterize metaphor as a means of secondary nomination;

- to define the main types and functions of metaphor;

- to reveal the conceptual nature of metaphor;

- to explicate the manipulative potential of metaphor;

- to analyse the use of metaphor as a means of speech manipulation in eight public speeches delivered by G.W.Bush.

INTRODUCTION

  • rationale for the study/topicality

NOTE-TAKING TECHNIQUES:

Direct quotation - Paraphrase - Summary

Quotation should be used to support your points, not to say them for you.

Limit brief quotations 2 per page and long quotations - 1 every three pages.

Introduce quoted and paraphrased material so that your reader will know whose work you are citing: According to Charles Morris,

- After each quotation or paraphrase, place the page number in brackets: [ 9, p. 57].

- it should not report your feelings, values, biases, etc.

CONCLUSION

- presents the summary of the results;

- includes a statement of whether or not your study supported your thesis/hypothesis;

- suggests possible implications for further research in the area;

- should not include citation, analysis or examples

formal in its use of vocabulary and correct sentence structure

Avoid contractions: do not, will not

Avoid addressing the reader directly as "you".

Avoid asking the reader direct questions

Avoid trite expressions, typical of colloquial speech
