Shops play an important role in our life. People cannot do without them. When people want to buy something, they go to shops where various goods are sold. At the grocer’s you can buy sugar, tea, coffee, salt, pepper, ham, bacon, sausages & so on.

Bread is sold at the baker’s, meat at the butcher’s. We go to the greengrocer’s for vegetables & fruit. Cakes & sweets are sold at the confectioner’s. We buy jewelry at the jeweler’s.

Some shops may have many departments. These shops are called department stores or supermarkets. Supermarkets are self-service stores with departments for different food products. Supermarkets sell thousands of food products: meat, fresh fruits & vegetables, dairy products, canned groceries, bakery items, delicatessen items, & frozen foods. Supermarkets also have seafood, alcohol & even household goods.

The supermarkets are located in shopping centers & along main roads. Supermarkets are popular because thy save time, have low prices & variety of products in one place. These shops are called self- service shops because the customers choose the goods they want to buy & pay for them at the cash desk.

Menu.

The menu is generally designed by the chef of the restaurant. The structure of the menu is usually based on the following courses:

- starters

- soups

- main courses

- desserts

When a chef designs a menu, he usually starts with the main course and then plans the other courses. There are four basic types of menus:

A la carte menu allows the customer to choose dishes which are cooked to order and served to the guests.

Table d’hôte menu offers a limited choice of dishes. The guests have to take the whole meal consisting of three or four dishes and pay a fixed price.

Carte du jour means “card of the day” and the dishes of this menu are served on this day only.

Cycle menu is a number of menus, which are repeated in a certain period of time. It is usually used in hospitals, student and school canteens.
