    1. Типи шкіл

Усі школи в Англії також поділяють на групи. Така система діє з 1998 року і до нині.

  • community schools (formerly county schools), in which the local authority employs the schools' staff, owns the schools' lands and buildings, and has primary responsibility for admissions. St Barnabas Church of England Primary School, Oxford voluntary controlled schools, which are almost always church schools, with the lands and buildings often owned by a charitable foundation. However, the local authority employs the schools' staff and has primary responsibility for admissions.

  • voluntary aided schools, linked to a variety of organizations. They can be faith schools (often the Church of England or the Roman Catholic Church), or non-denominational schools, such as those linked to London Livery Companies. The charitable foundation contributes towards the capital costs of the school, and appoints a majority of the school governors. The governing body employs the staff and has primary responsibility for admissions.

  • foundation schools, in which the governing body employs the staff and has primary responsibility for admissions. School land and buildings are owned by the governing body or by a charitable foundation. The Foundation appoints a minority of governors.

Many of these schools were formerly grant maintained schools. In 2005 the Labour government proposed allowing all schools to become Foundation schools if they wished.

There are also a smaller number of City Technology Colleges and academies, which are secondary schools funded and monitored directly by the Department for Education. Academies can also accept funding from private sources such as individuals or companies. The current government is greatly expanding the academy scheme by encouraging many schools to convert to Academy status.

All state-funded schools are regularly inspected by the Office for Standards in Education, often known simply as Ofsted. Ofsted publish reports on the quality of education at a particular school on a regular basis. Schools judged by Ofsted to be providing an inadequate standard of education may be subject to special measures, which could include replacing the governing body and senior staff.

Sir Peter Newsam, Chief Schools Adjudicator 1999–2002 відстояв думку,що школи діляться на 8 головних типів:

  • "super-selective": almost all of the intake from the top 10%. These are the few highly selective grammar schools that dominate school performance tables.

  • "selective": almost all of the intake from the top 25%. These include grammar schools in areas where the Tripartite system survives.

  • "comprehensive (plus)": admit children of all abilities, but concentrated in the top 50%. These include partially selective schools and a few high-status faith schools in areas without selection.

  • comprehensive: intake with an ability distribution matching the population. These schools are most common in rural areas and small towns with no nearby selection, but a few occur in urban areas.

  • "comprehensive (minus)": admit children of all abilities, but with few in the top 25%. These include comprehensive schools with nearby selective schools "skimming" the intake.

  • secondary modern: hardly any of the intake in the top 25%, but an even distribution of the rest. These include non-selective schools in areas where the Tripartite system survives.

  • "secondary modern (minus)": no pupils in the top 25% and 10–15% in the next 25%. These schools are most common in urban areas where alternatives of types 1–5 are available.

  • "sub-secondary modern": intake heavily weighted toward the low end of the ability range.[ 1]

Хоч і вважається, що державні школи є не популярними, однак попри це в Англії існують відомі, традиційні школи. Кожна з шкіл звичайно має свої особливості, але і відображає саме особливості освіти Англії. Розглянемо декілька таких шкіл.

  1. The Garden School

The Garden School is an independent school located in Queens, New York, founded in 1923. The Garden School has a gym, a field, an early childhood playground, a music/dance studio, an art studio, a computer lab, an infirmary, a main office, an inground outdoor swimming pool, and a cafeteria. The school's size varies based on enrollment. Currently, the total enrollment is between 250-275 students in Nursery through Grade 12. Usually the grade sizes will range from around 20-30. Most academic classes have 7-19 students, with additional teachers in Nursery, Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten.

Like all independent schools, Garden School is engaged in on-going fundraising efforts. Over the past months, discussions have been held which will likely lead to the sale of the school's field. The anticipated infusion of capital will enable the school to make major changes to improve the experiences of the entire Garden School community.

The school also hosts a variety of annual events, such as a Walk-a-Thon and Gala each spring which have raised money for "smart boards" and other new technologies for the classrooms and improvement to the gym. The school has been making great progress.

    1. Associations

At Garden School we focus on helping our students develop the skills they need to thrive in school and in life. All children are uniquely talented and have their own learning styles, so we combine time-tested teaching methods with creative approaches to reach out to all of our learners. Through a flexible teaching philosophy that is only possible in a school with small class sizes, our students evolve into readers, writers, and critical thinkers; they gain a deep grounding in math and the sciences; they become speakers of a second (and sometimes even a third) language; they acquire sophisticated eyes and ears for the arts; and they learn the value of helping others and taking care of themselves, and the balance required for both.

With each passing year, we see our returning students not only more mature and able to cope with new challenges, but also more connected to each other. It is that sense of being part of something larger than themselves—a culture of caring for and reaching out to others—that makes Garden School a home away from home for our students.

  1. Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges

  2. New York State Association of Independent Schools
