Emergency repairs

Mr. Wilson: How do you do. I’m the manager of the ship repair department. My name is Wilson. I’m responsible for your ship’s repair.

Ch. Engineer: How do you do, Mr. Wilson. I’m the chief engineer. My name is Petrov.

Mr. Wilson: Glad to meet you. I hope that our business relation will be fruitful and pleasant for the both parties.

Ch. Engineer: I hope too. Will you come to my cabin, please? Tea, coffee?

Mr. Wilson: No, thank you. Let’s get down to business. What’s the trouble?

Ch. Engineer: The matter is there was a fire in the scavenge air manifold and the damage is great.

Mr. Wilson: What’s the reason of the fire?

Ch. Engineer: Dry coking deposits in the upper part of the air scavenge manifold ignited during operation. We stopped the engine and extinguished the fire. Then we decoupled the engine and directed to the nearest port for repairs.

Mr. Wilson: I see. We have got preliminary information about future repairs. But I’d like to verify the amount of work and discuss the repair list (list of repairs).

Ch. Engineer: First of all the list of repairs includes the repair to the scavenge air manifold.

Mr. Wilson: Is it badly damaged?

Ch. Engineer: I think it needs replacement. It has some cracks. We tried welding but with poor results.

Mr. Wilson: OK. We can do it. What about the piston assembly? Is it in good serviceable condition?

Ch. Engineer: The piston assembly requires plasma-jet hard facing and cutting the grooves for the piston rings.

Mr. Wilson: As far as I understood, it’s necessary to replace the piston rings.

Ch. Engineer: You are quite right (right you are). It is included into the list of repairs.

Mr. Wilson: Anything else?

Ch. Engineer: And the last but not least. The top-end bearing needs overhauling. It’s necessary to measure the clearances first. If required, it should be rebabbitted and then fitted into position with necessary clearances.

Mr. Wilson: Ok, we’ll fix it up later in the course of repairs.

Ch. Engineer: And we will make up an additional list of repairs.

Mr. Wilson: But if I were you, I would also test the exhaust system. It may be the cause of blow-back and accumulation of deposits in the scavenge air manifold.

Ch. Engineer: No, thank you. It’s not necessary, because the reason was the leaking ring.

Mr. Wilson: It’s up to you to decide. But if you don’t mind we’ll check the state of the piston rod and the tension of the stay-bolts just to be on the safe side.

Ch. Engineer: No objections. And by the way, how much time does the repair take you?

Mr. Wilson: Not less than a week, I think.

Ch. Engineer: And can you speed up the work? We are pressed for time and must leave the port on Friday.

Mr. Wilson: OK. We will start tomorrow and do our best to finish the repairs by Friday.
