Bunkering procedure

If the ship is going to take fuel oil the engineers must sound the tanks and prepare them for filling. The tanks and their fittings should be inspected and checked for possible leaks. The fuel oil must be taken to the bottom tanks and never into the settling tanks.

Before receiving fuel, wooden plugs must be placed in all scuppers. It is necessary to have at hand a bag of sawdust and a bag of rags, the wrenches to tighten connection flanges. Fire extinguishers and a new gasket must also be ready to avoid any accidents.

All necessary valves on a fuel oil manifolds must be opened. It is necessary to provide phone connection and test phones before pumping operations start.

A person responsible for ship’s bunkering together with the barge (or pump) man should check the temperature of the fuel oil, get a sample of oil for the chief engineer and agree on pumping rate per hour. Also it is important to agree what signal will be given to stop bunkering. A competent person must be appointed to take fuel meter readings, to connect the fuel hose, to supervise it during fueling operations and to disconnect the hose after bunkering.

Discussing Bunkering Arrangement

B. S. : Good morning, Chief. The bunkering boat is next to your ship. Are you ready for bunkering?

Ch. Eng.: Yes, we have made all necessary arrangements. But let’s discuss the details.

B. S. : OK. How many tons per hour can you take?

Ch. Eng.: About 50 tons. And you should reduce the pumping rate at the end of fueling operation to avoid any overflow.

B. S. : We will do as you like. By the way, who is responsible for bunkering on your ship?

Ch. Eng.: The third engineer. He is a competent person. He has taken all necessary precautions. All scuppers are plugged, bags of sawdust and rags are ready to prevent sea pollution, fire extinguishers are available in case of fire.

B. S. : OK. I’d like you to appoint someone for leaks and overflow. And, please, send a competent person to take meter readings.

Ch. Eng.: I think the 3-d engineer will do it.

B. S. : Good. Let’s agree about means of communication.

Ch. Eng.: We have good phone connection. We have tested the phones before bunkering.

B. S. : It suits us. Who will give a signal to stop bunkering in case of an accident. And our shore attendant with remote pump control will stop bunkering immediately.

Ch. Eng.: OK. So, everything is ready.

B. S. : Let’s start then.
