Introduction
We moved beyond some stereotypes and prejudices in XXI century and thus the family structure has changed. The structure of a family that is considered normal now is not similar to the normative family structure of our grandparents’ time. The significant change is change of women’s role both in family and in society. About 50 years ago, in normative families, females were, taking care of their children at home, and doing housework, but now women have double burden. They are working outside home and still doing mothers’ duty. Men’s traditional role in family has changed, also. They begun to converse more with their children and support wives in hard housework. However, some males do not care about their responsibility to protect and support the family they have created. There are many changes occurred and it brought its’ advantages and disadvantages.
The present study attempts to make analysis of the family structure and the reasons that affected them: changes related to democratic society or respect and traditional conservatism. In brief, this study intends to find out the normative KIMEP U students’ family structure and describe the reasons why it is so. It is important to know what their parents’ role and are they influenced by global changes or not. It is evident that every country or population differentiates from each other. There was not found any study that conducted here.
For these reasons, the following research questions were formulated:
What family structure do KIMEP U students’ families have?
Who is dominant in the modern KIMEP U students’ families in the decision making process related to problem solving, budget regulating, and child upbringing issues and why?
What family structure are the students likely to build in the future?
The research could not study and report the normative family structure of all Kazakhstani people. Accordingly, the research’s population is small. This study defined modern KIMEP students’ families’ structure by volunteer students’ description of their families’ structure. The description found by survey that was sent to the students online. There was a problem with gathering planned sample of population because the link to the survey from surveymoney.com was sent to 50 students, yet only half of them responded, many of them are familiar classmates. Thus, there are many freshman students in the sample population which may impact the results.
This paper is divided into five sections: literature review, methodology, results, discussion and conclusion. In the literature review section many articles from scholars were read and analyzed. Some background information for making research on family issues topic is presented there. For the clear structure of a long section it was divided into three subtopics: general family policy in Kazakhstan, family diversity: recent changes, and specific family policies in different countries and people’s attitude to it. The review of the literature did not reveal any studies on this issue conducted in our university. For this reason the research’s population was our students. Methodology section described method that was used, the survey’s structure, and how the survey was conducted. The results section described results of the survey. There are main findings illustrated by figures that have description below them in results. According to them, many students that were responded described their family as “modern”, changed, and almost all of them are willing to combine family and work in the future. In discussion section all results were analyzed. The results show that the family structure was influenced by changes of woman’s role in workplace and in society. In conclusion, every section is summarized and limitations with recommendations to the further research are presented.
Although the function or the purpose of family seems to be similar around the world, family structure has significant differences in different society. That was the main point that this study found.
