Modern KIMEP U students’ family structure:

Who is dominating in decision making process?

Introduction

The family structure has changed over the years. The structure of a family that considered being normal now is not similar to normative family structure of our grandmothers’ time. The significant change is change of women’s role and in family, and in society. About 50 years ago in normative families’ females were seating at home, taking care of their children, and doing housework, but now women created double duty. They are working outside home and still doing mothers’ duty. Thereafter, men’s traditional role in family has changed. They begun to converse more with their children and support wives in hard housework. However, some males do not care about their responsibility to protect and support the family they have created. There are many occurred changes and the same number of advantages and disadvantages of that.

Our country counted as a one that saved traditions, there are might be some differences in family structure from general ones of other countries. The present study attempts to make analysis of the family structure and the reasons that affected them to be in definite way: changes related to democratic society or respect and conservatism to traditions. In brief, this study intended to find out normative KIMEP U students’ family structure and describe reasons why it is so.

In order to find out that research questions were formulated:

  • What family structure KIMEP U students’ families have?

  • Who dominate in the modern KIMEP U students’ families in decision making process related to problem solving, budget regulating, and child upbringing issues and why?

  • What family structure the students are likely to build in the future?

The research cannot study and find out the normative family structure of whole Kazakhstani people. Accordingly, the research’s population is small. This study is intended to define modern KIMEP students’ families’ structure by volunteer students’ description of their families’ structure. The description formulated by survey that was sent to the students online. There was a problem with gathering planned sample of population. Link to the survey from surveymoney.com were sent to 50 students and only half of them responded, many of them are familiar classmates. Thus, there are many freshman students in the sample population.

This paper is divided into five sections: literature review, methodology, results, discussion and conclusion. In the literature review section many articles from scholars were read and analyzed. There were found some background information for making research on family issues topic. For the clear structure of a long section it was divided into three subtopics: general family policy, family diversity: recent changes, and specific family policies in different countries and people’s attitude on it. Reviewing literature did not found any studies on this issue conducted in our university. For this reason the research’s population is our students. Methodology section describes method that was used, the survey’s structure, and how the survey was conducted. The results section describes results of the survey. There are main findings illustrated by figures that have description below them in results. According to them, many responded students described their family as “modern”, changed, and almost all of them are willing to combine family and work in the future. In discussion section all results were analyzed and comprehensively analyzed. The results show that the family structure was influenced by changes of women role in workplace and in society. In conclusion, every section was summarized and limitations with recommendations to the further research were presented.

Although the function or the purpose of family seems to be similar around the world, family structure has significant differences in separate society. That was main point that found this study.
