Foreign players in britain
British football has changed a lot recently. One of the biggest changes is the large number of foreign footballers who play for British teams. Perhaps the best foreign player is the Italian center forward Gia Franco Zola, who has played for Chelsea since 1996.
Zola's team, Chelsea, has more foreign players than any other British club. Some people think that this is bad for English football and destroys the chances of young English players. But other people say that the foreign players bring new ideas, new way of playing and new attitude that help young English players to improve their game.
The Chelsea fans love him for his brilliant football and for his humor. He helped Chelsea to win the English FA (Football Association) Cup in 1997 and he was British player of the year in 1997. However, he is a modest man who doesn't like to talk about his achievements.
Zola is a player who has adapted well to life in England. He says, «Of course, my friends and family are in Italy, so certainly there are things that I miss. But I have to say that in London I am finding things that make me think rarely of Italy1».
Like a lot of foreign players2, Zola enjoys the challenge playing3 in a different country. He says, «I believe that there is a certain quality that is very important in England: above all, you have to know how to use your qualities to serve the team».
