Making an Appointment

Today Pauline is calling at a business office to see the manager, Mr. Howard.

Assistant: Good morning.

Pauline: Good morning. Is this Mr. Howard's office?

Assistant: Mr. John Howard?

Pauline: Yes, I was wondering whether Mr. Howard could see me. My name is Martell.

Assistant: Oh yes, Miss Martell, Mr. Howard had a letter from Mr. Watson. He said you'd be writing to make an appointment.

Pauline: I decided to come in instead. I was rather hoping that perhaps Mr. Howard would be able to see me this morning.

Assistant: Oh, I'm very sorry, but I'm afraid Mr. Howard has several engagements today. He's at a meeting this morning, and he has several other appointments this afternoon.

Pauline: Then I'd better ask you to make an appointment for me.

Assistant: Yes, certainly. I'll just look in his diary. Now, would Friday at three-fifteen suit you?

Pauline: No, I'm afraid I shan4 be in London on Friday.

Assistant: Oh. Then could you manage Monday at eleven o'clock?

Pauline: Yes, that would be quite all right.

Assistant: Good. I'll make it for eleven o'clock on Monday, then.

Pauline: Thank you very much. Good morning.

Assistant: Good morning, Miss Martell. (В. В. C.)

IV

"I was thinking, Mrs. Evans, perhaps it might be a good idea if I took you out to dinner. What about next Wednesday?"

"Out to dinner?"

"Yes, out to dinner. What's wrong about that? Don't you eat?"

"Oh yes, I eat, but you surely ought to be keeping an eye on your job."

"Is it a permanent trait in your character, this desire to tell people their duty? Or do you just do it to me?"

"All right then, next Wednesday."

"I'll pick you up at your house. Is that convenient? We can go out somewhere in the car. Do you like cars?"

"Oh yes, I do." (M. Dr.)
