Text c Oxford
Oxford is like London: it is international, it is very old and it has great charm. It is also a town that grew up near the river Thames.
Oxford is international because students from many parts of the world come to study at its university. They come to study at one of the twenty-seven men’s colleges or at one of the five women’s colleges that are the university: they join the University “family” that has more than 9000 members. Oxford is old and historical. It has existed since 912. The University was established in 1249. The oldest of the twenty-seven men’s colleges is University College.
You can see the charm of Oxford in the green fields and parks which surround the city and you can see it in the lawns and gardens which surround the colleges. You can see the charm of Oxford in the river Thames and its streams which pass near the city.
Do you know that the name Oxford means the part of the river Thames where the oxen (cattle) forded (crossed)?
III. Read and translate the text about “Eton College” using a dictionary.
Text d Eton College
Eton College is the top public school for boys in the UK. The giant title “public” means exactly the opposite of what it says, for most children cannot go to this type of school. The fees for public schools are so high that only very few people can afford to send their children there. Private education of this kind exists in no other country on the same scale.
A famous and exclusive public school for boys is situated in Eton, a town about twenty miles west of London, on the River Thames. The school was founded in 1440 by King Henry VI and some of the original buildings are still standing. Many famous figures from British public life were educated at Eton. Immediately opposite Eton, across the Thames, is Windsor, a town which is closely associated with Eton. Windsor Castle, the largest castle in England and the favourite home of the Royal family, dominates the skyline of the town. With their historic buildings and riverside setting Eton and Windsor are very popular tourism attractions.
Despite the name, a public school is in fact a private school were students pay fees and live for the duration of each of the three school terms. The opposite is a state school, which is non-fee paying and where students attend each day and live at home, Traditionally, public schools were always singles schools but now many of them are becoming co-educational, i.e. both boys and girls attend the school. Eton, however, still remains a public school for boys only.
