Dialogues: Travel by Train.

Dialogue 1. Read and translate the dialogue:

Tourist: Excuse me, what time does the next train to London leave?

Ticket seller: At 17:35, from platform 8.

Tourist: OK, I would like two tickets to London, please, for this train. By the way, is it a direct train to London?

Ticket seller: Yes, it is.

Tourist: Great.

Ticket seller: First or second-class?

Tourist: What’s the difference in price between the two?

Ticket seller: First class tickets are £45 each and second-class tickets are £30 each.

Tourist: I’ll take two second-class tickets.

Ticket seller: Single or return, sir?

Tourist: Return, please.

Ticket seller: When would you like to come back?

Tourist: Is there a train that leaves London in the evening on Monday?

Ticket seller: Yes… there’s a train from London leaving at 19:45. Would you like me to book two tickets for you?

Tourist: Yes, please do. Second-class as well.

Dialogue 2. Read and translate the dialogue:

Tourist: I am taking the four o’clock train today.

Ticket seller: First or second class?

Tourist: Do you accept credit cards?

Dialogue 3. Read and translate the dialogue:

Tourist: I want a ticket to Brighton, please, second class, return.

Ticket seller: Second return. Four pounds, please.

Dialogue 4. Read and translate the dialogue:

Tourist: I would like to book two round-trip tickets to Boston.

Ticket seller: Do you prefer smoking car or a car for nonsmokers?

Tourist: A non-smoker, please.

Ticket seller: I will reserve for you two tickets for the ten o’clock Sunday train.

Exercise 1. Find the equivalents from the dialogues (1 – 4) to the following:

Dialogue 5. Match the following words with the text:

Traveller: Hello. I would like some information about ….. from Amsterdam to Paris, please.

Operator: Hold the ….. , please. I will put you ….. to International Enquiries.

Clerk: International Enquiries. Can I help you?

Traveller: Yes. Can you tell me about trains from Amsterdam to Paris tomorrow?

Clerk: Certainly. What time would you like to …..?

Traveller: It does not really matter, but I have to be in Paris by 8.00 p.m.

Clerk: There is an ….. at 10:50, getting in at five past five.

Traveller: I would ….. to leave a bit later, I think.

Clerk: Well, the 12.26 ….. in Paris at 18.57, but you have to change in Brussels.

Traveller: I see. In that case the 10.50 is probably the best. Can I ….. a ticket now? I have got a ….. card.

Dialogue 6. Read and translate the dialogue:

Tourist: Good morning. I would like some information on rail travel in the UK, please.

Travel clerk: Certainly. Would you like to take a seat?

Tourist: Thank you. Right, well, I am with my wife and son and we are planning to spend two weeks travelling around Britain. I would like to know about tickets.

Travel clerk: I recommend you buy the Brit Rail Pass. That gives you unlimited travel all over Britain.

Tourist: How long does it last?

Travel clerk: Well, you want to travel for two weeks, so, I suggest you buy the 15-day Pass. It is valid for 8 days travel in a period of 15 days. It is good value.

Tourist: What about children?

Travel clerk: It depends on age. Children under five travel free. Those between five and sixteen travel for half price.

Tourist: Sounds great! How much is the adult fare?...
