Then use the list below to compose short dialogues of two phrases.

Task 8. Read and translate the dialogues, and act them out. Note useful words & expressions.

Dialogue 1. DO YOU WANT TO COME TO THE MALL WITH ME?

(Spencer likes to browse through the music store and he asks Doris whether she wants to go to the mall with him...)

Spencer:

Doris, do you want to come to the mall with me?

Doris:

I'd love to, but I'm broke. / Don't feel like it. I'm broke.

Spencer:

So am I, but I like browsing through the music store there.

Doris:

Are you sure you only want to browse?

Spencer:

Yeah. I like to listen to new albums there. I don't have money to buy them, but I can go there and listen. You know you don't have to pay for listening.

Doris:

Well, we can also do some window shopping, can't we?

Dialogue 2. DO YOU HAVE THESE SHOES IN SIZE SEVEN?

(Karen walks into a shoe store. She wants to buy a pair of new shoes for herself.... )

Clerk:

May I help you?

Karen:

Yes. Do you have these shoes in size seven?

Clerk:

I'm not sure. If you can't find them on the rack, they may be out of stock. But let me look in the stockroom.

Karen:

Thanks. I'd like to try on a pair if you have them.

Clerk:

I'll be right back.

Dialogue 3. CAN I HELP YOU?

Assistant 1:

Can I help you?

Customer:

No, I’m just looking, thanks (= I don’t need help)

The customer goes to other section.

Assistant 2:

Can I help you?

Customer:

Yes, I’m looking for (= I want) some pants.

Assistant 3:

Can I help you?

Customer:

I’m being served, thanks. (= another assistant is helping me).

Assistant 1:

What size are you looking for? (e.g. big? small? medium? 12? 14? 16?)

Customer:

Where’s the changing room (= the fitting room)?

Assistant 1:

It’s over there on the right.

Customer:

I’ll take this one/these. (= Yes, I want to buy this one/these)

Customer:

No, I’ll leave it thanks. (= No, I don’t want to buy them).

Customer:

Excuse me. Where do I pay for these?

Assistant 1:

Over at the cash desk/till.

Customer:

Can I pay by cheque/ credit card?

Assistant:

Yes, of course.

Dialogue 4. SHOPPING FOR A SWEATER

Assistant:

Can I help you?

Customer:

Yes, I'm looking for a sweater.

Assistant:

What size are you?

Customer:

I'm an extra large.

Assistant:

How about this one?

Customer:

Yes, that's nice. Can I try it on?

Assistant:

Certainly, there're the fitting rooms over there.

Customer:

Thank you.

Customer:

How does it fit?

Assistant:

It's too large.

Customer:

Do you have a large?

Assistant:

Yes, here you are.

Customer:

Thank you. I'll have it, please.

Assistant:

OK, how would you like to pay?

Customer:

Do you take credit cards?

Assistant:

Yes, we do. Visa, Master Card and American Express.

Customer:

OK, here's my Visa.

Assistant:

Thank you. Have a nice day!

Customer:

Thank you, goodbye.

Dialogue 5. ARE YOU BEING HELPED?

(Karen walks into a boutique. She wants to buy a scarf .... )

Assistant:

Hi, are you being helped?

Karen:

No, I'm not. I'm interested in some scarves.

Assistant:

All our scarves are in this section. What do you think of this one here? It's made of silk.

Karen:

Hm, it looks nice, but I'd like to have something warm for the winter.

Assistant:

Maybe you would like a heavy wool scarf. How about this one?

Karen:

I think that's what I want. How much is it?

Assistant:

It's...seventy-five dollars plus tax.

Karen:

It's a little expensive. Do you think it's possible to get a discount?

Assistant:

Hm, since you like it so much, how about a 10 percent discount? That's the best I can offer.

Karen:

That's good. Could you wrap it up for me?

Assistant:

Sure. Is there anything else I can get for you?

Karen:

No, that should be it. Thank you.
