Однажды атеист, прогуливаясь вдоль обрыва, поскользнулся и упал вниз. Во время падения ему удалось схватиться за ветку маленького дерева, росшего в скале. Вися на ветке, раскачиваясь на холодном ветру, он понял всю безнадежность своего положения: внизу чернели замшелые валуны. Его руки, держащиеся за ветку ослабели.
«Ну, - подумал он, - только Бог может спасти меня сейчас. Я никогда не верил в бога, но я, должно быть, ошибался. Что я теряю?» Поэтому он позвал. «Боже! Если ты существуешь, спаси меня, и я буду верить в тебя!» Ответа не было.
Он позвал снова: «Пожалуйста, Боже! Я никогда не верил в тебя, но если ты спасешь меня сейчас, я с сего момента буду верить в тебя».
Вдруг Великий Глас раздался с облаков: «О нет, ты не будешь! Я знаю таких, как ты!»
Человек так удивился, что чуть было не выпустил ветку. «Пожалуйста, Боже! Ты ошибаешься! Я на самом деле думаю так! Я буду верить!» – «О нет, ты не будешь! Все вы так говорите!»
Человек умолял и убеждал.
