A MODERN UKRAINIAN POET: VASYL' STUS

Vasyl' Stus is a Ukrainian poet.

He was born on January 8, 1938, in the village of Rakhnivka, Ukraine.

He died on September 4, 1985, in the camp for political prisoners in Russia.

BIOGRAPHY

Though born in the vicinity of the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv, Stus spent his childhood and youth in the Donbas Region, an extremely russified area of Ukraine. After graduating from a Teachers' Training College he worked as a teicher of Ukrainian language and literature. In 1963 he moved to Kyiv to become a graduate student in literary theory at the Institute of Literature under the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. In 1965, during the period of political thaw in the USSR, Stus publicly protested against the repressions of the Ukrainian intelligentsia, for which he was expelled from his graduate program. In 1972 he was arrested, charged with anti-Soviet propaganda and sentenced to five years in the camps and three years of exile. He returned back to Kyiv in 1979 only to be arrested again eight months later. This time he was sentenced to ten years of imprisonment and five years of exile. Stus died in a punishment cell at a camp for political prisoners in the Urals. He was 47 years old.

LITERARY WORK

As a poet, Stus started publishing in 1963—1965. His first collections of poetry «The Circuit» (Kruhovert'), «Winter Trees» (Zymovi dereva), and «The Merry Cemetery» (Veselyj tsvyntar) were written before his incarceration. However, it is his prison poetry, namely the collections «А Candle in a Mirror» (Svicha v svichadi) and particularly «Palimpsests» (Palimpsesty) that are considered the height of his creative heritage. Filled with existential anguish, Stus' prison poetry explores the themes of life and death, fate and destiny, individual choice and responsibility. It is the treatment of these themes that places his works in the context of those written by the most distinguished incarcerated intellectuals, such as Paul Verlaine, Taras Shevchenko, Oscar Wild, Jean Genet, Alexander Solzhenitsyn. Stus also takes the undeniable leading place on the modern Ukrainian literary horizon.
