Jimmy is referring to the lovers (Julia and Michael, Julia in particular), He seems to be making a point that humans in general are capable of doing and saying some crazy things because of love. The lovers don't notice it, but for any outside observer the foolishness is readily apparent.

Michael is a very thrifty person, and he hated going into debts. He would never lend nor borrow money, he always saved up not to get in a penniless situation.

3. Explain the metaphor "she is a millstone round his neck." Who does it refer to?

"I think an actor's a perfect fool to marry young. There are so many cases in which it absolutely ruins a chap's career. Especially if he marries an actress. He becomes a star and then she's a millstone round his neck. She insists on playing with him, and if he's in management he has to give her leading parts, and if he engages someone else there are most frightful scenes. And of course, for an actress it's insane. There's always the chance of her having a baby and she may have to refuse a damned good part. She's out of the public eye for months, and you know what the public is, unless they see you all the time they forget that you ever existed."

A millstone around your neck is a problem that prevents you from doing what you want to do. When an actress and an actor become a family, they are supposed to do everything together, if one goes up, he must help his spouse to gain popularity, even if it is against his will.

Michael was a very handsome man, but he didn’t put up airs about it. he knew he looked better then he acted. So he didn’t feel bad about unfavourable critics, as he knew that the critics were right.

Michael’s mother discusses her son with Julia, he was raised as a gentleman in a family of military (he was an army brat), he received good education, however he decided to be an actor, and even thought during that time it was a shame to be an actor, because of the wild life style. But it was considered that if he was a gentleman, it would keep him from falling.

Michal was offered to travel to America to take part in a play, the manager was charmed by his beauty. However, Michal wasn’t a good actor, and the manager only saw him in Candida. It was the only part he was half-way decent in. After his lack of talent was discovered he failed to become a famous actor in America.

Michael was away in America, so Julia missed him a lot and she didn’t want him to stay there any longer, and she was happy to hear that he didn’t have success so he would return home soon.
