Foreword

The book is meant for the full-time and part-time students of the senior courses of the University Philology Department who take English as their principal subject. The book is intended as a principal and theoretical aid to supplement the Course in Theoretical English Grammar which forms part of the curriculum for the university faculties of foreign languages.

The aim of the book is to activate students’ knowledge in theoretical grammar, to help them to apply their knowledge in linguistic studies, to undertake independent syntactical analysis of the structure of compound and complex sentences in English. The book contains the plans of the seminar classes, theoretical material and practical assignments aimed at deepening the students’ knowledge in the syntax of composite sentences.

The book deals with the following theoretical questions:

- communicative and structural types of sentences in English;

- structural peculiarities of compound and complex sentences in English;

- peculiar features and their place in the structure of a complex sentence;

- types of adverbial and attributive clauses in English;

- grammatical classification of the subject and the way it is expressed in English;

- structural classification of the predicate in English and its agreement with the subject;

- secondary parts of the sentence and the ways they are expressed in English/

The book also provides different exercises for all the main topics treated at seminars in the Syntax of a Composite Sentence and meet the requirements of the programme in this subject.

The following tasks are put before the students studying the Syntax of a Composite Sentence:

- to make a syntactical analysis of different types of composite sentences;

- to define the type of nominal, attributive and adverbial clauses;

- to determine the principal and secondary parts of the sentence, their structure and the ways they are expressed by;

- to learn the peculiarities of the inverted word-order in English;

- to study punctuation in different types of composite sentences.
