Murmansk is one of the biggest cities and seaports in Russia and the largest city in the world beyond the Polar Circle. The population in Murmansk is about 400,000 people. That's why the town needs a lot of specialists for food industry.

The Murmansk State Technical University trains highly qualified technologists both for fishing industry and food industry.

I've decided to become a technologist as I've been always interested in chemistry, biology, healthy life style. Also I consider this profession to be useful for people, to be creative and prestigious.

The technologist at the food processing enterprise is usually the key person in food production. That's why he (or she) is responsible for all kinds of work, and the successful work of the enterprise depends directly on the qualification, experience, skills, professional knowledge and responsibility of a technologist.

In order to make food products of high quality the technologist must know and perform his duties well. The duties of the technologist are as follows:

  • to know perfectly well different food products and the procedure of the food processing;

  • to exercise control over the technology of food processing and proper storage of food products;

  • to determine the quality of food products stored in storage rooms, semi finished products, and finished products;

  • to keep the processing equipment in order and ready for food processing.

Also he is responsible for proper use of raw materials as well as labels and empties or packs.

Methods of food processing are as follows: salting, freezing, chilling, marinating, cooking, boiling, frying, drying, smoking, irradiating, etc.

Practically all workers at the food processing enterprise work under the technologist. It is the responsibility of the technologist to provide proper running of the technological process and supervise the work.

To become good specialists the students of the technological faculty should study many special subjects, such as organic chemistry, industrial microbiology, food stuff production and many others. They also have practice after the third and fourth years of study.

Every technologist must know English well nowadays if he wants to have knowledge about modern methods of food production, new products and technological techniques.

After graduating from the Murmansk State Technical University our specialists can work at many food processing plants and factories as well as in the canteens, cafes and restaurants.
