TASK 3
Exercise 1. Meat: To Eat or Not To Eat? a) Read some opinions expressed by different people on this problem and say if you agree to them or not.
(1) However, there is no easy answer to the question. Some people say meat is bad for us; others claim meat is essential for our health. So where does the truth lie?
(2) Experts say red meat, such as veal, can be harmful: if you eat a lot of it, you may develop heart problems. White meat, such as pork or chicken, is not as bad, according to the experts. Furthermore, it is argued by anti-meat-eating groups that if more people switched to a vegetarian diet, there would be less starvation in the world.
(3) In the case of children, doctors agree that they need a balanced diet to help them grow. Meat provides a range of proteins and vitamins that are essential for a healthy body. Finally, although I personally don't eat meat very often, many people think it is the most enjoyable and satisfying type of food.
(4) Perhaps a reasonable compromise would be to say, "Yes, eat meat – but don't overdo it!"
B) Here is a student's answer to the question. Read it quickly, and give it one of the following grades. Use the criteria in the box to help you decide.
Very good Good Satisfactory Unsatisfactory |
There are many good thinks we can say for meat and the first and to my opinion the most impotant is it tastes fantastic I like meat and we eat it a lot to my house, my favourite kinds of meat is the meat from the pig I love the porky and mainly with potatoes and lots of sose. For me the answer in this question is a bing yes! I believe that is sorry for the animals but is truth we are hanters man is hanter (and in now a days and the woman is! and for these again I am saying yes I will always eat the meat.
It is bad the animals must to suffer for this and of course this is the bad with meat; which I have told, and before but what we can do? They also say that meat makes some cows mad – and some people – but this is a think that is happening only in the England and anyway the problem is fixed by the scientists. Or soon it will.
c) Correct the grammar, spelling and punctuation of the student's answer.
d) Now it's your turn. Write your own answer to the question. Write between 120 and 180 words.
Exercise 2. Mad Cow Disease is very serious and yet, as with many serious problems, people make jokes about it. Complete this joke, using one word for each space.
There are two cows (1) a field somewhere (2) Britain. One cow says (3) the other, "Aren't you worried (4) it all?" The second cow replies, "Worried? (5) what?" "You know", says the first cow, "what they are saying (6) us (7) the newspapers and (8) TV". "What are they saying?" asks the second cow. "You know", answers the first cow, "that we cows are all a bit mad and that we suffer (9) Mad Cow Disease". The second cow replies, "What's that got to do (10) me? I'm a duck".
Why do you think people joke about things like this?
