New Idioms

  1. to live from hand to mouth = to have just enough money to live on and nothing extra My father earned very little and there were four of us kids so we lived from hand to mouth.

  2. to make ends meet = to earn and spend equal amounts of money. (Usually in reference to a living with little money after basic expenses.) I have to work at two jobs to make ends meet. 

  3. to be broke = to have no money (usually to participate in some group activity). I'm afraid I can't come, I'm broke.

  4. not have a penny to your name = to be very poor

  5. to live on a shoestring = with very little money

  6. to feel the pinch = to have problems with money because you are earning less than before When my father lost his job and we had to live on my mother's earnings, we really started to feel the pinch.

  7. money doesn’t grow on trees = you should be careful how much money you spend because there is only a limited amount 'Dad, can I have a new bike?' 'We can't afford one. Money doesn't grow on trees, you know.'

  8. to be born with a silver spoon in one’s month = to be born wealthy

  9. to foot the bill = to pay for something; to pay for a bill. 

  10. dirt cheap = very cheap

  11. for a song = cheaply. (Typically: buy something ~; get something ~; pick up someone ~.)  I could buy this house for a song, because it's so ugly.

  12. daylight robbery = unfairly priced (same as a rip off)

  13. to keep one’s wits about one = To remain alert or calm, especially in a crisis
