Hello,

and music in our life". •
But
first of all let's train our phonetic drills.

What
are they so enthusiastic about?
[а] —
among; other;
[0]
— things; both; theatre.
Oh,
about everything. Among other things; they are both; they are both
very enthusiastic about the theatre. Among other things they are
both very enthusiastic about the theatre.

[
loathe the theatre; and I loathe the enthusiasts; I loathe Arthur
and' Mar- I tha.
Repeat after the speaker and mind the intonation:
Arthur and Martha are such enthusiasts. They areTso enthusiastic. What are they so enthusiastic about?Oh, about everything. Among other things | they are bothTvery enthusiastic about the theatre.Mm... 11 loathe the theatre. And 1 loathe the enthusiasts.I loathe | Arthur and Martha.
Teacher.
Now, please, try to act the dialogue. Who'd like?
Teacher.
Well, thank you. And do you loathe the theatre? Do you loathe music?
P
u p i 1. As for me, I don't loath music, 1 enjoy it.
Teacher.
That's nice. Here you can see the quotation:
Music is a free art, an open-air art, an art boundless as the wind, the sky, the
sea.
Debussy.
How
do you consider "music" and "art"? Do they have
the same meanings or there is some difference?
Pupil.
As for me, I think "art" has more general meaning than
"music", it concerns the creativity of man as
distinguished from the world of nature.
Teacher.
So, it's something artificial. Can we call "art"
artificial?
P
u p i 1. On no account, "art" goes out from the man's
heart and soul, it's a kind of his vision and expressing his
thoughts and views.
P
u p i 1. To my mind, "art" is making or doing of things
that display form, beauty and unusual perception in different
ways. That's why art includes painting, sculpture, architecture,
literature, drama, and music. So "music" is a branch
of art.
Pupil.
I'd say "music" is a branch of liberal art as
distinguished from the sciences because as Debussy said music
is a free open-air art. So music expresses liberty of feelings
and emotions that is boundless as the wind, the sky, the sea.
Music grazes a raw place, excites listeners greatly, and makes them
thrill.
Pupil.
I'd like to add that music is structurally complete and emotionally
expressive compositions, harmony, rhythm. And as music reflects life
it says that there must be harmony in our life too. And different
genres of music tell us about that in different ways as people's
tastes differ.
Pupil.
Music doesn't allow people to be up in the clouds, to live in a
dream world because we have a lot of problems that must be solved as
quickly as possible. Music is also a weapon; it fights for
light against darkness, for freedom against tyranny, for humanism
against barbarity ("Seventh Symphony" by Shostakovich,
"Sixth Symphony" by Tchaikovsky). So, I agree with
Longfellow that music is the universal language of mankind,
because it helps people to unite, communicate and understand each
other.
Pupil.
I'd say music helps us to live, supports, encourages and inspires
us. It coincides with our mood. For example, in summer we're gay and
merry, because of the brightness around us and so, we prefer to
listen to the light music, its tunes are happy and easily caught.
Then autumn comes, the cheerless time when the beauty of nature
is about to vanish and fade and the earth is sad and lonely. All
that makes our hearts be filled with gloom, but at the same time be
filled with poetic inspiration. So we look at everything with
another eye upon and feel the inclination to listen to the light,
classical music as to "Seasons" by Tchaikovsky in his part
"Autumn Song".

Then
winter comes and it seems that nature is wrapped in mighty sleep and
everything is silent and glittering like in fairy tales, serious
classical music inspires us.

1. Чайковського).
And
we feel how some big strength is maturing for the new spring.
Звучить
фрагмент «Проліски» («Пори року»).
Teacher.
You've seen how through music we can follow the changes in nature,
its state, and its mood, because music can depict and express every
detail. Listening to it we imagine and see what's going on. So,
music turns us to nature and unites us with it.
Pupil.
It's not a secret that the calm flowing moonlight over the dark of
one winter's evening inspired Beethoven to write his "Moonlight
Sonata".

Listening
to it we can first hear the dance of spirits upon the lawn, then
j breathless,
hurrying movement, descriptive of flight and uncertainty and \
then vague impulsive terror, which І
carried
us away on its rustling wings and left us all in emotion arid
wonder.
P
u p і 1. As for me I wouldn't say that it's easy for every listener
to get a keen sensual delight and pleasure of classical music. I
agree that such music creates a special spiritual world for the
listener, which immensely enriches his inner life and makes him
happy.
Pupil.
I'm awfully sorry, but 1 can't find that keen sensual delight in
classical music. It's an exclusive art: most people don't understand
it and that's why don't like it. It is not a popular art. The very
length of most classical music pieces can send any listener to
sleep. People want the kind of music to which they can dance or just
talk to friends. It should be simple, cheerful and up-to-date.
Pupil.
But of course, we must be taught not only to listen but to
understand it, which is more important. As it is the more we
have listened to one and the same music from our childhood, we begin
to understand what feelings it contains aiid inspires us, so we'll
be able to combine all the feelings into one and feel real
happiness.
Teacher.
Right you are. What's your opinion?
Pupil.
It's difficult to find the way into serious classical music, we must
be ready for it that's why more often in our everyday life, and we
can hear light and pop music. It's like some people don't like
winter because of the cold weather. I prefer a cold winter to a hot
muggy summer. And I think that after the terrible July we had
last year, low temperatures are kind of refreshing.
Те
а с h e r. That's right. And such refreshing can be the music
too. Listen to the extract and say what impression you've got.
Звучить
фрагмент рок-музики.
Pupil.
It's
my music! So as for me I listen to the classical music very rarely,
I prefer rock all the year round, because it can express all
kinds of my mood. I can find in rock a firm support, basis, refuge,
something like or suggesting a rock as in strength and
stability.
Те
а с h e r. You're right. Rock is popular especially with the
youth. How can you account for the large-scale popularity of
rock?
Pupil.
Rock is popular with the young people because its rhythms are full
of vigor and force, just what appeals to the youth, the tunes are
easily caught and young people "get tremendous kicks"
listening to this kind of music.
Pupil.
I'd like to add that the very popularity of this genre speaks in its
favor. It attracts masses of young people. Why should we
deprive of the joy we obviously 'get from the music? The words of
the songs deal with the younger people's world, their hopes,
dreams, disappointments and joys.
Pupil.
And, besides, all changes in the life are usually made by young
people and so it is in music too. Young listeners search
for new rhythjns and new styles, and rock can be called an
experimental kind of music, different groups are looking for
new forms and sometimes achieve really. People want the kind of
music to which they can dance or just talk to friends. It should be
simple, cheerful and up-to-date.
Pupil.
I'd say that, of course, tastes differ and everybody is fond of
particular genre of music. But let's think music is the
background of our life. We can hear not only our favorite music, but
other genres of music too, because music is everywhere: in
concert halls, in parks, on TV and radio, at homes, in transport and
even in the street. Wfe live and listen to the music.
Teacher.
Yes, right you are. Music is really, first of all, the background of
our life, it helps us to live, and it makes our mood. Even while
walking along the streets, we can attend so-called promenade
concerts. Now you'll listen to the text about such concerts. Try to
understand it and be ready to do the tasks.
